Specsavers Opticas warns of increased visual problems in children

11 September 2017 - 10: 50

Specsavers, with more than 1.600 opticians around the world, warns us about a worrying fact, such as the increase in visual problems in children, especially in myopia. It is important that some measures are taken, such as parents limiting the time the child spends in front of a screen and taking them to play for more time outdoors.

Another recommendation is to perform regular visual exams after the age of three. Saher Shrief, director of Specsavers Opticas in Torrevieja has confirmed that "more and more children are seen entering our optics with visual problems, and I'm afraid that much has to do with the fact that they spend more time watching television and using more digital devices, such as tablets or smartphones".

Other optical experts from all over the world are also confirming this trend. According to the National Eye Center of Singapore (SNEC), excessive use of mobile devices can cause problems such as myopia and amblyopia in young children.

Excessive use of computers and other portable electronic devices can cause eye fatigue and overexposure to harmful blue light, which could increase a child's risk of eye degeneration during adulthood.

From Specsavers Opticas, parents are advised to be aware of the following symptoms as they may indicate that your child needs a visual examination:

- Complain about headaches
- Show light sensitivity
- Force the view
- Sit too close to the TV
- Say your eyes hurt

Specsavers Opticas advises all parents to perform a visual test before returning to school. This September may be a good time to approach Specsavers in Jávea, Avenida del Pla 125 Edificio Caribe, Local 6.
