A visual exam can detect eye cancer early

February 28 from 2023 - 13: 19

When Teresa B. booked her eye exam at Specsavers Ópticas Jávea, he had no idea that such a test would save his sight and potentially his life.

Teresa had begun to notice an area of slightly blurred vision in her left eye and suspected that it could be the beginning of a cataract. But, during a visual examination complete, the optical team noted that there had been significant deterioration in the clarity of his vision and distortion of peripheral vision.

“After having a very complete visual examination at Specsavers Ópticas de Jávea, they told me that I should see a specialist as soon as possible, because it was necessary to investigate the results. The next day I visited a private ophthalmologist who advised me to go to the emergency room as soon as possible, since he suspected that he had a tumor in his eye.

Teresa was referred to Hospital La Fe in Valencia, where they confirmed that she had choroidal melanoma, the type of eye cancer more common in adults. “I was told that I should be admitted to the hospital for a radiotherapy treatment called ocular brachytherapy for five days, in order to stop the growth of the tumor.

I had further tests to see if the treatment had been successful and an injection was given in my eye to prevent further damage from the radiation therapy. The medical team was satisfied with the results. and he was able to tell me that everything was fine. Now I will have to have bi-annual check-ups at the hospital and they will give me another injection every four months.

I have lost some vision and the blurry vision in the lower left eye will be permanent, but it is not very serious and I am extremely grateful for the excellent care I have received."

isabella fenollar, director of Specsavers Ópticas, comments that she was very happy that Teresa went to the optician when she noticed a change in her vision. “People don't usually think much about the health of their eyes, unless they notice changes in their vision. But the truth is that the eyes can tell us a lot about health in general, even if we don't notice anything different. That's why it's so important to do periodic reviews.

We would not have detected the tumor if we had not performed our complete visual examination, which includes the use of the most advanced technology to detect health problems in the front and back of the eye."

Teresa, who couldn't agree more with Isabel, states: “I would highly recommend everyone to have regular eye exams. If I hadn't come to Specsavers, possibly this disease would not have manifested itself for a considerable time and the ocular damage could have been irreversible and the cancer could even have spread to other parts of the body.

“I am very grateful to the optometrist Cecilia Navarro for the thorough visual examination they performed on me and for being so efficient in referring me and helping me understand the importance of further testing and treatment as soon as possible.”

The optometrists of Specsavers Ópticas They perform comprehensive visual exams that allow them to fully and professionally review both eye health and vision. The test lasts about 20 minutes and includes the use of specialized equipment to examine eye health and determine the most appropriate prescription and type of lens for each patient. The optometrist will also be able to answer possible questions and identify vision problems that you may have. And whenever necessary, he will refer us directly to a ophthalmologist for a more thorough medical examination.

Periodic reviews with Specsavers Ópticas they can help us maintain a clear and comfortable vision. For most, it is advisable to have a visual exam every two years, but if an eye problem appears or if your optometrist advises it, it is better to go before.
