August 01 from 2023 - 11: 17

As the hot summer continues, experts from Specsavers Ópticas advise everyone to take care and protect their eyes from the damage caused by UV rays. The UV radiation from the sun It has been identified as one of the main risk factors for the development of cataracts, as well as being related to a series of eye problems that can arise later in life.

Cecilia Navarro Tudela, Jávea Optical Specsavers, explains: “Although cataracts are a common age-related eye condition, there are several steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of developing them. These include quitting smoking, keeping chronic diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure under control, preventing eye injuries by wearing protective eyewear, and protecting your eyes from the sun. Eating a healthy diet, rich in antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, can also help prevent cataracts. Since cataracts are the main cause of blindness worldwide, it is advisable to properly protect the eyes from the sun, especially in a sunny place like Spain.

How to better protect your eyes from the sun this summer?

1. Wear sunglasses

Wear sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection whenever you go outside during the day, even if it is cloudy or overcast.

Look for sunglasses that have a label or sticker stating that they offer 100% protection against UVA and UVB radiation.

Unfortunately, not all sunglasses provide sufficient protection from the harmful UV rays, so make sure your sunglasses comply with safety regulations. Wearing sunglasses that do not meet safety standards, especially those with dark lenses, is more harmful to the eyes than not wearing them. Dark glasses dilate the pupil and let more harmful rays through; Without glasses, your eyes would naturally squint to keep those rays out.

If you don't know if your sunglasses protect you as they should, Specsavers Ópticas in Jávea, Calpe, Benidorm, Guardamar and Torrevieja they offer a free service to check if your glasses have UV protection.

2. Choose the right sunglasses and complement them with a hat

Sunglasses with large, wraparound frames cover more of the eyes and surrounding areas and provide better UV protection than smaller frames. Polarized lenses also reduce glare and improve vision in bright sunlight.

A wide-brimmed hat can provide additional protection from UV radiation, especially for the eyes and the skin around them.

3. Avoid the hours of greatest solar radiation and seek shade whenever possible

Avoid being outdoors during hours of greatest solar radiation, normally between 10:00 and 14:00, when the UV index is highest. Seek shade under trees or other structures when you are outdoors during these hours.

4. Beware of reflective surfaces

Water and sand can reflect UV radiation and increase your exposure, so be extra careful at the beach and pool. Make sure that both children and adults wear sunglasses and hats to protect their eyes.

isabella fenollar, Jávea Optical Specsavers, explain it cataract is a common eye condition in which the lens loses its transparency. Symptoms include blurry, cloudy, or cloudy vision, difficulty seeing in dim or very bright light, and discomfort when looking at bright lights. You may also have double vision, see halos around bright lights, and colors may appear dull or have a yellow or brown tinge.

If you have any of these symptoms, get a complete eye exam to check the health of your eyes. The optometrist will assess your vision and general eye health, and if he thinks you have cataracts, he may refer you to an ophthalmologist for diagnosis and treatment.

In some cases, cataracts may not need to be treated right away, especially if they do not cause significant vision problems. In these cases, the ophthalmologist can follow up and recommend surgery when the cataracts begin to affect vision.

Cataract surgery consists of removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Cataract surgery is a safe and common procedure, with a high success rate and a low risk of complications."
