May 04 from 2023 - 12: 10

Cecilia Navarro Tudela She is an optometrist, businesswoman and mother, currently on maternity leave after having her second child two months ago. on the eve of Mother's Day, we spoke with her about how she balances her professional career with a young family.

Q: Thank you for serving us, Cecilia. Tell us a little about yourself.

A: I am from Agres, but now I live and work as an optometrist and director of optics here in Jávea. I worked for Specsavers Ópticas for 13 years and became co-director a year ago. I am also the proud mother of two beautiful children, Sara who is 5 years old and Hugo who is only 2 months old.

Q: What attracted you to optometry?

A: I was drawn to optometry as a profession because I liked the science and I loved the idea of being able to help people see better and even, in some cases, save their sight by providing quality eye care.

Q: Has it been difficult for you to combine your career with motherhood?

A: I am proud to be able to balance my work as an entrepreneur, professional optometrist and mother of two children. There's no question that working moms have a tough job of balancing personal and professional responsibilities, but with support and the right partners, it's possible to do what you love.

Striking a good work-life balance is always difficult, but there are many good companies that try to help women find the middle ground. I really appreciate that at Specsavers Ópticas there are no salary differences and that the working conditions and opportunities are the same for men and women. Luckily, I know there are many other companies that work hard to ensure equal rights and equal pay.

In my case, I really value working in a big company because that helps you and gives you flexibility. At Specsavers Ópticas Jávea we have formed a great team of highly qualified and hard-working people. I know I can leave the business in their hands and focus on enjoying my maternity leave."

Q: What would you advise parents to ensure the visual health of their children?

A: Watch out for signs of vision problems from an early age. Unfortunately, children can find it difficult to identify vision problems or know how to communicate them. However, there are some things to pay special attention to because they could indicate a vision problem in children. For example, sitting too close to the TV, rubbing their eyes repeatedly, complaining of headaches, showing clumsiness or squinting.

In these cases, I suggest that you go to perform a visual examination as soon as possible. 80% of the information children receive comes through their eyes, so poor vision can cause learning and development problems. That is why it is important that children have an eye exam before school.

We know it's hard to stop kids from using phones, tablets, and computers. However, the time they spend in front of these screens can cause problems such as eyestrain, blurred vision and dry eyes. Help your children reduce the risk of developing these problems by taking regular breaks away from screens and reducing the time they spend each day in front of them.

Q: Do you have any advice for the family in general?

A: I would recommend thinking of an eye exam as a health check, rather than just using it to find out if glasses are needed or not; and make an appointment regularly, at least every two years. Many eye conditions, such as glaucoma, develop without any symptoms, and only a visual exam will alert you to the problem before permanent vision loss occurs. Regular eye exams create healthy habits for the whole family.

Thank you Cecilia, enjoy the rest of your maternity leave and happy Mother's Day!
