Contributing their grain of sand, Specsavers Jávea and the Specsavers group has announced its collaboration with the foundation DiabetesZERO to raise funds for research into a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. The agreement, which will extend throughout 2024, aims to goal to raise more than 5.000 euros to finance crucial research projects in Spain.
In this way, Specsavers opticians, including the one in Jávea, will embark on a series of challenges and activities throughout the year to raise funds. Additionally, they will dedicate themselves to raise awareness among clients and communities on Diabetic retinopathy, a visual complication associated with Type 1 diabetes that can lead to blindness if not treated properly.
Specsavers has chosen the NGO DiabetesCERO as the official solidarity project for 2024, as diabetes is a growing global concern, affecting 537 million people worldwide. It is associated with serious health complications, and one of them is diabetic retinopathy, which can cause permanent vision impairment.
This is why Specsavers emphasizes the importance of educating about the connection between diabetes and vision loss, which is why diabetics should control their glucose levels and undergo periodic visual examinations with advanced technology to detect possible damage to the optic nerve. before they affect vision.
In Spain, More than 1.000 people are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes each yearor, most of them under 15 years old. The lack of cure and increasing incidence make research crucial. Isabel Mérida, president of DiabetesCERO, commented on the opportunity offered by the collaboration: "We cannot forget that diabetes is behind the majority of cases of blindness at working age in Spain. This initiative not only focuses on prevention, but that also highlights the importance of investing in research to cure this invisible disease for many.
In this context, Specsavers Jávea has installed solidarity piggy banks for donations, and various challenges, activities and sponsored events will be carried out throughout 2024.
