The Minister of Science and Innovation, Pedro Duque, took advantage of the visit to Xàbia to approach the Lighthouse Cabo de San Antonio. accompanied by the mayor of the town, José Chulvi and the lighthouse keeper, Antonio Fontes, the minister saw the farera facilities (currently very deteriorated) that will become an Interpretation Center of the Marine Reserve.
Fontes explained the operation of the lighthouse that is 175 meters high from sea level and is now practically automatic, and urged the Minister "make an effort to acquire the adjoining building that belongs to Correos". Before this request, Duke said that "I will do whatever it takes to help my people" adding that "It is important that we change the economic model in Spain, that tourism is something else, such as scientific capabilities, the cleaning of our seas and natural parks and that the people who visit us have another idea of what is the Valencian Community and Spain ".
Duke noted that "centers like this (in reference to the one that will be created in the future in the lighthouse) that start with a beautiful walk through the Cape San Antonio and they end up in an exhibition of all the research that is done in Spain to preserve the environment and where they can even make technological developments in information technology, they are a new point of sustainable and future model ".
For its part, the mayor, José ChulviHe indicated that "It is important that the minister knows the space in the current situation and we can count on the support of the Government of Spain since the lighthouse of San Antonio is the responsibility of the Port Authority of Alicante and depends on the Ministry of Development."
Chulvi added that "the concession was obtained to start the drafting procedures of the project but we think that we must be accompanied by the Government of Spain. At this time, the Town hall already has the project and the next step will be to show it to the public".
The first mayor expressed the intention of the session to contact the active group "Don't stop the lighthouse light" and share the idea of the project with them.
