The full Javea Town Hall has approved a motion to support the agricultural and livestock sector that in these weeks is demanding with numerous calls and demonstrations a reduction in taxes on fuel, better prices for its products and a relaxation of EU environmental regulations, among others; but which also determines that the Consistory must draft a local strategic plan regarding agriculture, fishing and food.
The motion that was debated in the ordinary plenary session in February went ahead with the support of the local government (PP, CpJ and Vox) and Compromís, while the PSPV opted to abstain.
This plenary agreement collects the support of the Town Hall (and by extension of all the neighbors) to the farmers and ranchers in the mobilizations that they have organized and in municipal terms it indicates that the City Council is committed to drafting a Local Strategic Plan for Agriculture, Fishing and Food.
Furthermore, the central government is urged to demand that the European Union guarantee the free circulation of goods and demand the immediate payment of compensation to producers who have suffered attacks while traveling to other countries of the Union, by agricultural organizations. French. As well as that the Government promotes in the Commission the prohibition of importing products treated with phytosanitary products not authorized in the EU from third countries that are not EU.
And that the Commission requires third countries to apply citrus products to the same environmental requirements that farmers in the Valencian Community and the rest of the regions of the European Union apply; and that these citrus imports be subjected to the cold treatment, a treatment that is only imposed on oranges that come from South Africa.
Another request is that health control at the borders be strengthened to prevent the entry of foreign pests and diseases that are causing serious damage to the sector.
On the other hand, the motion includes the demand that the central government modify and expand the Agri-Food Chain Law to prohibit unfair practices, so that the prices that farmers receive cover the costs of production.
Likewise, it urges you to demand that the EU make the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) more flexible and simple, and the motion also requests that the central Government increase its contribution to agricultural insurance in the same proportion as the Valencian Community does.
But, it also requests the postponement of the implementation of the digital exploitation logbook never before 2026 and the preparation of a shock plan that helps alleviate the effects of the crazy increase in production costs that the agri-food sector is suffering and the measures are necessarily accompanied by labor legislation that recognizes the specificity, temporality and seasonality of agricultural and livestock activity.
Another agreement requests support for hunting control to monitor the excess population of those species that cause agricultural and livestock damage, avoid traffic accidents, and contribute to the general environmental balance and the rural economy; and voluntariness in the application of the Animal Welfare Law, so that Spanish ranchers can freely choose their form of livestock exploitation, with traceability being necessary to indicate the type of farm management. Whether it is animal welfare or traditional, always complying with the requirements of animal health and food safety.
On the other hand, it urges the central government to continue investing in the modernization and improvement of irrigation throughout the country, helping irrigation communities to adapt and invest in efficiency in terms of water resource consumption and the reduction of electrical expenses. promoting the use of renewable energies and automated systems for the sustainability and profitability of farms. In addition, a review of ecological flows be carried out, and also that they invest in hydraulic works such as repairing reservoirs and making new small reservoirs that are capable of retaining rainwater.
After approving this agreement in plenary session, the mayor of Xàbia, Rosa Cardona, which in turn holds the delegations in matters of Agriculture and Fisheries, has sent it this week to the central Government, as well as to the agricultural, livestock and agri-food associations of the province of Alicante and the Community, since that was one of the points included in the agreement.
