The City Council meets with the vendors of the mercat to study their proposals

02 July 2020 - 18: 00

Given the disagreement expressed by the sellers of the textile stalls of the street market on Thursdays in Xàbia during the morning of today, in which they had to set up their stalls, by the organization proposed by the Town hall, the councilors of commerce, Marta BañulsAnd Services, Kika Mata, has met, on two occasions, with the spokesmen of the group to study the alternatives they propose.

As reported by the City Council, they had been organized in two alternate shifts since the current regulations to prevent the spread of COVID-19, in addition to increasing the distances between stops, force the capacity to be controlled at any space where it is carried out. street vending to verify that those who access wear a mask and comply with hygiene measures.

The Xàbia market is usually distributed in three spaces: Plaza Constitución, Placeta del Convent and Plaza Marina Alta. However, since the de-escalation it has gathered in the Plaza Constitución since the City Council has closed free access and directs customers through two entrances, where there are municipal personnel supervising that preventive measures are complied with.

On the part of the sellers, their proposals are as follows:

  • Riding as always in all three seats: Given this request, the City Council cannot control the capacity at the other two locations since there are other fixed businesses (especially hotels) and they are transit areas. Nor can it allocate more personnel to control the market, so the only viable option is to reduce the number of stalls to the available space.
  • Moving all the textiles to Avenida Augusta: This proposal has been discarded because the Triana bridge is closed; the first Montañar It only circulates in one direction and parking is prohibited, so Augusta Avenue is the alternative for the urban bus, beach users. etc.
  • Occupy Montaner Park: From the consistory, all the space has been measured to see how many seats will fit, but there is still not enough space for everyone. The council and vendors have been called to continue looking for options but as of late this morning, no agreement had been reached.

Also clarify that at the moment none of these sellers have paid the 2020 rate to the City Council and that, given the circumstances experienced (two-month hiatus and new conditions), it was already planned to recalculate it on a prorated basis. No seller will pay more than what corresponds to him for the days that he finally assembles.
