A time capsule is buried in the bell tower of the Church of San Bartolomé de Xàbia

28 March 2024 - 15: 00

The current and arduous work to recover and maintain, for the future, the heritage of Xàbia is encapsulated in a stainless steel tube in the bell tower of the Church of St. Bartholomew and guarded by the four bronzes. The future will discover, in about 100 or 200 years, what happened in Xàbia to restore the bells.

Press clippings, pen-drives with images, the signature of the citizens, a stamp of Jesús Nazareno, the raffles held to raise money, the town hall insignia and different documents that make official the great work to preserve the heritage have been placed in the capsule of the time in the presence of the mayor of Xàbia, Rosa Cardona and the parish priests of the St. Bartholomew Church.

The objective, with this gesture, which puts an end to the action to restore the bell tower and give life to the bells, is to transmit to future generations what Xàbia did and the union it had, "to the Xàbia of the future tell it that we hope having lived up to the inheritance received, which we have taken care of and left in a better state so that they continue with its protection," said the parish priest Juan Antonio Navarro.

The rehabilitation project, initiated by the previous priest, Salvador Torrent, has involved great and long work. The roof and bell tower of the temple were rehabilitated, leaving a small space in the rough of the bell tower to freeze the present and where the capsule has been introduced and sealed with a piece of rough stone from Xàbia with a cross at the hands of the last tosquero of the town, Pepe Ribes.

Navarro has asked the future that "when opening this tomb look at the past with affection and know that we did everything in our power to take care of the heritage of Xàbia" and added that "the four restored bells unite us with our past, they unite us to us in the present and they want to unite us with the future.

Furthermore, at the event, Mr. Navarro gave a souvenir to those present as a symbol of this action, a piece of rough stone from the bell tower in memory of the recovery of the bells and their sounds.

The capsule records and puts an end to the rehabilitation project of the Gothic Church of Xàbia and to this end, the final touch has been placed. with the First General Turning of the four bells after being restored and installed in the bell tower. E
