El Town hall de El Poble Nou de Benitatxell wants to promote the agricultural culture and mitigate the abandonment of the fields, and for this it has created a land bank, whose objective is to connect the owners of rural plots and possible interested parties in working the land.
This initiative has been in the making since 2020, when the Department of Agriculture entrusted a study to the Buscatierras Rural Dynamization Agency. This study reveals, among other things, that in the municipality there are 2.187 agricultural or forestry plots, of which 682 (31%) are in a state of abandonment.
The land bank, which begins to operate this Friday, will provide a solution to this problem that is increasingly accentuated by the lack of generational change. It will function as a record of fields whose owners are willing to make an assignment, sharecropping or rental contract.
In this way, people interested in expanding the amount of land to work or in starting a new agricultural activity, will be able to consult this registry and contact the owners to agree on the transfer model. In between, there will be a manager who will be in charge of managing the contacts and facilitating the agreements.

Its implementation will increase job and business opportunities related to the agricultural sector ”, said the Councilor for Agriculture and Economic Promotion, Mayte Roldán. "If we also take into account that working the land means managing the territory and fighting climate change, we are convinced that it will be a sure success."
