El Mayor of Xàbia, José Chulvi, participated in the discussion forum on Tourism and Sustainability Forum Save Posidonia Project promoted by the council of Formentera. The first mayor exhibited together with members of the Formentera Island Council, the iron council, the Balearic Government and the Town hall of Barcelona, the normative project of Xàbia to regulate the anchoring of boats.
Chulvi affected the tourist pressure and the indiscriminate anchorage suffered by areas of great value and fragility such as the Calas, "since Cala Blanca (cove) and Cala Sardinera to the granadella. In all these areas there are mooring buoys that, however, are clearly insufficient ".
To reverse this situation, between the City Council xabiero, Generalitat Valenciana, Ministry of Environment and social partners are working to develop the rule that regulates the LIC (Site of Community Interest) of the cliffs of the Marina Alta. With this normative advance, it is intended to put an end to the use of anchors by law on Posidonia meadows.
And, the Posidonia is responsible for the clarity of water, the absorption of CO2, the conservation of beaches and biodiversity.
Conservation of the natural environment
Also, in this round table, the mayor of Xàbia explained the latest actions that have been carried out in the municipality for the conservation of the natural environment. Chulvi pointed out the markings for the sea caves, the bus service to Granadella or the popular days of coastal cleaning. The mayor of Xàbia also valued the good collaboration of the private sector in these measures.
In this sense, José Chulvi stated that "It is our responsibility to act and do it with determination if we want to preserve our lifestyle and our business model. We have the experience that any measure of protection has very beneficial effects to the environment in a short time and, above all, a magnificent popular response: our neighbors demand us to take care of Xàbia and the Mediterranean environment and we must assume this responsibility ".
Mediterranean Xàbia Fòrum
Participation in Save Posidonia Project is part of the collaboration strategy that Xàbia has initiated with other Mediterranean destinations with which it shares strengths, but also weaknesses and threats. Aliarse, in this case, aims to share experiences, learn and replicate successful initiatives and reinforce the message of environmental, cultural and economic sustainability. In addition, some of the Save Posidonia Project, such as the consell of Formentera, Government of Mallorca and the Ministry of the Environment, will also be the days 26 and 27 in Mediterrània Xàbia Forum, in which many of these debates will be retaken to achieve a more sustainable tourist activity and daily action.
Conclusions of the Posidonia Forum of Formentera
Following the interventions in the Posidonia Forum a major goal has been reached to protect Posidonia. And, in order to make tourism and the conservation of the natural environment compatible, different actions must be implemented, including legislative, technological and didactic action.
In short, to implement more effective norms and creation of new protected areas, to improve the
waters and develop diffusion work so that the citizens of the Mediterranean know what is at stake and create emotional ties.
