The 25th Living Chess of Xàbia shouts "enough" to contaminate the sea

30 July 2023 - 01: 51

A spectacular representation with the participation of a hundred people and a clear message of love for Mother Nature marked the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Xàbia Living Chess. The silver anniversary of this Festival of National Tourist Interest, the only one in the town, made this event bigger.

Under the title (A)MAR, playing with the meaning of the words amar and mar (to love the sea), the chess game represented the story between two communities, the terrestrial and the submarine, launching a message of awareness to humanity, respect for the environment.

Thus, the game begins when a human expedition goes into the depths of l'Illa del Portitxol to discover the life of an underwater civilization, which lives on the residues of the world above. They believe that everything that reaches the sea is a gift and they make their way of life out of it. But no, over time, the underwater community begins to get sick (the tiles on the board fall) due to all the waste that they have provided for their clothing, food, etc.

The game ends with the victory of the human expedition, who has found the problem that is destroying the marine ecosystem but it seems that it is too late for a solution. With this message, the 2023 Living Chess wanted to convey to the public the need not to throw waste into the sea, to respect the environment and to recycle. The message launched a strong "enough" with the intention of going back a bit the current great pollution that exists in seas and oceans.

The guest of honor at this event was Francisco Torner, as a representative of the Fundació Oceanogràfic, who was presented with a sculpture by Bartolomé Velasco. To point out that regarding the subject of the work, the Foundation has always had an extensive link with Xàbia through the projects carried out on our coast, among which the preservation of the oceanic posidonia stands out.

The story of this (A)MAR was an original idea by Álvaro Monfort, and the dramaturgy and direction was Raquel Violero. Also, the play was directed by Rafael Andarias and organized by the Comissió de Festes Mare de Déu de Loreto. Hundreds of people attended this event that also featured live music by the Xàbia Artistic Musical Center Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Joan Bou and dances by the dancers of Endanza.

How curious that in Chulvi's 12 years as mayor, living chess did not have that need to shout enough to contamination.
    What things, right?
    Curious.

Very beautiful and original on the other side is the Arenal. Who pollutes the sea? Well, ourselves.
