The French cove of Jávea

May 17 from 2021 - 13: 01

La French cove, located on the coast of Xàbia, between the Cala Blanca and Cap de Sant Martí, is an almost hidden place that is difficult to access. It can only be reached by sea or on foot along a hidden path. Among the characteristics of this cove is that it is gravel, not very long, but has crystal clear waters and wonderful views of the bay of Xàbia. Its occupancy level is low and its seabed invites you to practice water sports such as snorkel.

Next you have an index with all the points that we are going to deal with.

Origin of its name

This natural area owes its name to the renowned artist, André Lambert. He was one of the first tourists to settle in the town of Xàbia. Illustrators and architects, that's how they were in the Lambert family. They were good ambassadors for Xàbia, since they made the municipality known throughout Europe. They fall in love with the landscape, the architecture and the people, it was for this reason that around the 20s they decided to build a house in Portitxol.

The house was located just above a cove that was practically hidden. With the passage of time, this cove became known as the French Cove, as it was the language that the Lamberts spoke among themselves even though they were Swiss.

A secret cove

Since the house that the family built was located right in the path that gives access to the cove, this place remained secret for the use of anyone other than the family. However, the cove is for public use and despite the fact that its access is on the Lamberts' private land, they must allow the citizens who want to reach it to pass through. Although on occasions, the owners of this farm have tried to prevent access, finally, the passage is open.

Where is it located

La Cala del Francés is located between the Cala Blanca and the Cap de Sant Martí. Specifically, its coordinates are 38.760515, 0.211585. To get there you have two options, one by sea and the other by land.

Access

Access to the cove by sea must be done from Cala Blanca, that is, from there you must reach the second cove and from there, skirt the coast to finally reach Cala del Francés. This option can be quite uncomfortable, and somewhat dangerous, due to its terrain.

But there are other options that you can consider to get to the cove, one of them is by kayak, a way that is already common among tourists. And another option would be with a boat.

On the other hand, there is also the possibility of accessing it by land, following a hiking route from Cala Blanca. The road is just past the Les Caletes Viewpoint, through a gate with black bars. Following this path, you go down towards Cala del Francés. The entrance is always open. The owners were forced not to close this access, the only one possible by land, since the beach is public.

Activities and services

Since it is an almost secret cove, it does not have any type of services (lifeguards, bars or nautical activities companies), although you can practice snorkeling, diving or any other related activity on your own.
