Traditions and customs of Jávea

Javea is one of the most popular cities in the Costa Blanca. Without any doubt, the rich history of Jávea has made it possible that today there are many customs inherited from ancient cultures.
The 60s' undoubtedly had a decisive impact on the inhabitants, since they moved from an eminently agricultural society (based on agriculture and fisheries) to a structure that was quite different due to tourist demand, which influenced both the landscape and in its natural environment.

Market:
Every Thursday of the year, with the exception of holidays, a market is installed in Jávea in the place popularly known as "El Buit" (Constitution Square), next to the Institute and next to the road to Calvary. Vegetables and fruit can be acquired mainly, but also, salted, skins, sausages, clothes, etc.

Seiners:
This work was formerly effected by women, the same who were responsible for making or repairing sails and other marine rigs.

Currant:
This activity was momentous in the past of Jávea. In summer most of the inhabitants moved to the cottages, where harvesting was done.
Vintage is one of the most laborious and interesting processes. Muscadine grape is the most characteristic of the region, targeting of this specialty for obtaining passes. Grapes after cutting transported to an oven scalding, where the preparation of passes was performed.

The auction:
It is a daily ritual intended to assess the day's work. Formerly it was done on the sand of the beach, but today, the Lonja meets all technical advances for its realization.

Pilota Valenciana:
It is the oldest sport played in Jávea, as well as the most representative of Valencian culture. The most popular modalities are the "raspot" (when the ball goes flush with the ground) and "llargues" (through the air).
The goals are counted in Valencian in a similar way to tennis: "quize, thirty, quaranta and joc".

Els colombaires:
Palomos sports or colombaires always have originated from a particular hobby among men of Jávea to be a typical sport of Valencia.

Bous de Carrer:
From time bulls in Jávea represent one of the most important shows of festivals.
Els bouers and the "fifths" (boys who turn 18 that year), are responsible for organizing this party. A series of barriers that cover some streets are installed, leaving a closed enclosure.
