'For a sea without butts' prevents 4.000 cigarette butts from reaching the sea

09 September 2020 - 16: 38

On Sunday, September 6, the first phase of the campaign was concluded By a sea without butts promoted by the Rotary Club of Jávea, the Javea Town Hall and Club Nautico de Javea.

The campaign, which began in early August, consisted of the personalized delivery of disposable cardboard ashtrays to smoking users on the beaches of La Grava, Barraca and Arenal and users of the Nautical Club, taking advantage of this delivery to raise awareness about the importance of avoiding contamination with butts from marine waters.

It is estimated that some 4.000 cigarette butts have been collected in the methacrylate containers that were manufactured for the project.

"We know that there are many more left on the extensive coastline of Jávea, but we hope that the campaign has left a trail of awareness among smokers, who are increasingly sensitive to the need to achieve a cleaner environment and avoid unnecessary damage to the ecosystem There are many people who have praised us for the effort we make to spread this idea ", indicate from Rotary.

The organizations that have promoted this campaign point out that "Among the lessons learned during the project is the finding that the greatest amount of cigarette butts on the beach are not generated during bathing hours, but during the hours when the walks and beach are used in the afternoon and evening as meeting places and walks. We will look for a way to also sensitize this user profile to the need to deposit their butts in the appropriate ashtrays ".

From now on, the second part of this initiative begins in which the Nautical Club will continue to promote this project in the coming months with the delivery of ashtrays at its entrance office to those who request it before go out to sea.

Likewise, it is proposed to extend the project to the general population during the winter months, replacing the motto of the sea with another that says: "For a people without cigarette butts", placing ashtrays in strategic places during parties and celebrations.

"The summary we make is positive, we believe we have taken a first step in a series of actions that will lead us to achieve a healthier environment for the future of the population. We reiterate our gratitude to the volunteers and collaborators for the success of the draft", they point out from Rotary and add that in addition to members of the Rotary club of Jávea, volunteers from 'Xàbia net between tots' , 'Jávea I want you clean', and Cala Clémence on the beach Barraca, also counting on the help of the workers that the city council has hired to control the capacity of beaches during this
summer.

"It is worth noting the presence, during all weekends, of the councilor for services, Kika Mata, who has given an example of personal involvement in the actions he undertakes ", qualify from the association.

First I want to say that I am a smoker, so that it is clear that not all smokers are dirty. But I always carry a portable ashtray (which the City Council gave away a few years ago, which it stopped doing for no reason, because I suppose they would have a budget for such a small expense) and that not only do I not throw a cigarette butt anywhere, but I pick up what others throw away. Not just cigarette butts, plastics, bottles, meters of nylon from fishermen, pipes, cables, clothing (yes, clothing, I could put a used clothing store with the sneakers, caps, socks, T-shirts, etc., that I have been collecting from throughout the year, not only in summer), with what all this poses a danger to marine and terrestrial fauna, in addition to the logical environmental pollution. But, either the City Council teases us, or they don't know what they are saying and they only serve to take photos. The City Council recently changed the existing bins along the Paseo del Arenal, which had an ashtray, for more modern ones without an ashtray. Is that logical? Let them explain it to me and stop complaining. And it is not only the vacationers who get dirty, those of Jávea, whether they are residents or natives, too. You just have to take a walk in November along the coast or the countryside to see it.

This is going to be a joke, right? Now you start doing cleaning propaganda and photos of cigarette butts, now?
Come on, all summer enduring the most nauseating disgusting, nobody cleaning anything, and now they come up with «your image washing», please, do not insult us in this way, please do not go overboard, I beg you, that everything has a point, what do you think?

I find it intolerable that they come now to do this campaign, deplorable.

Many things are disgusting, one is how dirty the beaches have been left by tourists, they imagine the other.

Now that summer is over, there is hardly anyone on the beaches, now the councilor cleaning the beaches ???

    how professional, yes ma'am, perfect

  4. María says:

Kika put up signs that warn the PIGS that there is a fine, put bins every 10 meters and put people cleaning the beaches !!! You wait for the tide to rise and the waves come to take all the shit.

Kika, it is very appropriate to be in the photo, but you have to be ALL YEAR showing your face, ALL YEAR ROUND !!!!!!!!
