The mayor of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell, Josep Femenia, has awarded the winner of the ninth stage of the Tour of Spain to the Dutch rider Tom Doumoulin who has also become the new leader of the race.
Femenia has also received the congratulations of the director of the Tour of Spain, Javier Guillén, who has underlined the excellent organization of the stage and the success of placing the goal on a peak as spectacular as the Puig de la Llorença.
The stage has been a great public success. Fans filled the gutters to cheer their idols. Thousands of people have moved to the Llorença Puig, a mountain that enters through the front door in elite sport and the legendary cycling.
The two climbs to Puig have uncovered a unique landscape. This rise has revolutionized the general classification of the Tour of Spain. The last winner of the Tour de France, Cris Froome, attacked with strength and courage. Only Doumoulin, a promising young Dutch rider, has resisted his demarraje and in the last meters, has managed to pass you and gain the stage victory. The stage Benitachell has so far been the most exciting of the current Tour of Spain.
The mayor has expressed his desire that the Unipublic company, organizer of this stage race, will again have the Poble Nou de Benitatxell to host another stage next year. "We all enjoyed it immensely. The race was very exciting and these steep ramps have lived a day of cycling at the highest level", highlighted the munícipe.
