The 11 islands located in front of Xàbia will become the 'Noah's Ark' of flora and fauna

May 14 from 2021 - 17: 43

The Climate Emergency Department promotes a project to convert the islands off the coast of Xàbia into a 'Noah's Ark' of flora and fauna. It is a group made up of 11 islands that stands out for hosting unique populations of flora, such as the Ifac silene or the Ibiza dandelion, and fauna such as the yellow-legged gull or the shag.

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition, Mireia Mollà, today visited the set of islands off the coast of Xàbia where the Ministry is promoting a project for the recovery and reintroduction of species. Mollà has departed from the Port of Dénia together with the regional secretary for Climate Emergency, Paula Tuzón, the general director of Medio Natural, Benjamín Pérez, and the mayors of Dènia, Vicent Grimal and Xàbia, José Chulvi.

The initiative promoted by the Ministry seeks to turn these islands into a 'Noah's Ark' of fauna and flora threatened or even already extinct in our territory. The councilor explained that "the isolation and conservation conditions [of the islands] make the whole a unique candidate to host threatened coastal species and the reintroduction of extinct ones."

"The Department is working with the different state and municipal administrations to implement a land-sea co-governance model adapted to the Mediterranean that streamlines the effective protection of the coastline," said Mollà.

The delegation has traveled different points of the coast of La Marina with special attention to the bay of Xàbia, the island of Descobridor or the Marine Reserve Cap de Sant Antoni, which finalizes the approval of its regulations for the Special Conservation Area (ZEC) which, according to the forecasts, will enter into force before the end of this year.

The actions planned for this year focus on preparing censuses, conducting surveys, evaluating the presence of invasive flora and determining the appropriate places to expand and consolidate security populations. Last April the Wildlife Service and the Xicotetes Iles Mediterranees Initiative - coordinated by the Conservatoire du Litoral (France) - organized a work campus to visit all the islands and inventory their fauna and flora.

The group of islands, which total 96,986 m2, stand out for hosting unique populations of flora and fauna in danger of extinction or in critical danger. The Illot de la Mona, in the Montgó Natural Park and declared Micro-Reserve of flora, houses one of the few nuclei of silene de Ifac and the only original population of arboreal alfalfa outside of Ibiza and Columbretes.

The councilor has advanced new actions framed in the initiative, such as including the area in the plan for the reintroduction of the osprey and the paíño and creating new areas for the recovery of flora populations.

Mollà has underlined that "conserving on paper is not enough: we want to work to bring these habitats to the best possible state so that they can accommodate their own species and that in many cases have disappeared".

The program not only recovers endangered species, but also follows in the wake of the pioneering initiatives that in the 70s defended making these islands protection spaces for birds and that even installed a colony of Eleonora's falcon.
