Hospital Clínica Benidorm launches its Quick Care Circuit for Nephritic Colic

26 July 2021 - 10: 21

Hospital Clínica Benidorm has launched its Nephritic Colic Rapid Care circuit whose objective is to diagnose the patient in the shortest possible time to control pain, make specific follow-up with the Urology specialist and, in a few hours, offer the best possible treatment and a solution durable.

This condition, which occurs more frequently in summer, becomes very painful and disabling and can lead to serious kidney problems. For this, this medical circuit ends with the treatment that each patient needs: from pharmacological treatments, minimally invasive surgery or treatment of urinary stones with Holmium Laser.

Nephritic colic is a picture of pain produced by the existence of a stone inside the urinary tract, which causes an obstruction and the expulsion of the stone or stone contractions. In addition to pain control, it is very important to ensure complete expulsion of the stone because a persistent obstruction of the urinary tract could have repercussions on kidney function.

Quick medical circuit to control pain

The first objective of the Nephritic Colic Rapid Care Circuit is to control the patient's pain and diagnose its origin from the Emergency Service.

Most of the time, triage of the patient with a high degree of pain allows attention to be received in less than 10/15 minutes. The patient is evaluated according to his personal history, allergies, physical examination and diagnostic tests are performed (general analysis, renal function and urine; simple abdominal X-ray and / or renal ultrasound) to provide analgesic treatment and fluid therapy.

Depending on the evolution, renal repercussion and degree of pain control, the patient could be admitted under the supervision of the Urology Service. But in most cases with favorable evolution and good pain control, the patient will be referred to the urology specialist within a maximum period of 48 hours.

Kidney stone treatments with the Urology specialist

Once the pain is controlled, the Urology specialist will be the one who evaluates the pathology that gives rise to the colic. For this, new analytics and, above all, imaging tests can be carried out for the study and location of the stone and assessment of possible renal repercussion.

Depending on the condition of each patient, the Urology Service of Hospital Clinica Benidorm can offer different therapeutic options:

- Pharmacotherapy. On many occasions the body itself is able to expel the stones naturally and only a drug is needed to help this process.

- Holmium Laser Lithotripsy. This technique, the best tolerated and with the best results, allows to destroy the lithiasis (kidney stone or urinary stone) of any hardness and almost any size with a last generation laser, with less aggression to the organism and facilitating a quick recovery.

HCB is the only center in the Marina Baixa and Marina Alta that currently has a Holmium Laser, which allows a rapid application of the treatment when it is prescribed.

Most of the cases are solved with medication or with laser. But not all patients are candidates for these solutions, for them HCB has other minimally invasive surgical techniques such as percutaneous nephrolithotomy, (the kidney stone is removed through a small incision in the back) and the ureteroscope (the stone is trapped and ruptures in pieces through the urethra and bladder to be eliminated with the urine).
