Ecologists in Action requests the withdrawal of the Blue Flag from the Arenal beach in Xàbia

May 28 from 2022 - 01: 02

Ecologists in Action of the Marina Alta has denounced, through a report, the existence of points of contamination and discharges in the Arenal Beach of Xàbia, for which it requests the withdrawal of the quality label (Blue Flag) awarded to this beach.

The group assures that it has sent this report to representatives of the Ministry of Ecological Transition (MITECO), the EPSAR, the Javea Town Hall, and ADEAC, in which he points out the five main causes of pollution on this beach.

Ecologists in Action indicates that: the Fontana canal wastewater pumping station, the outfall, the Fontana canal marina, the Punta del Arenal drain and the nightlife venues They are the pollution problem.

The environmental group explains that on the one hand "Xàbia's sewage system does not adequately separate the collection of rainwater and wastewater, so when it rains heavily, the capacity of the sewer network is saturated, and also causes the dumping of wipes".

Ecologists in action Marina Alta also reports that the fact that the Fontana channel is close to the beach "is another source of pollution due to the gases emitted by the nautical engines of the boats and due to the waste from tires and buoys that remain in the bottom".

Given these reasons, the group proposes in its report "8 possible solutions to improve these polluting points". Among these proposals are:

  • Invest in improving sewage infrastructure
  • Increase the power of the wastewater pumping station located next to the Fontana canal.
  • Consider the creation of "storm ponds" to avoid the massive influx of rainwater and wastewater that reaches the WWTP (treatment plant)"
  • Improve the capacity of control, maintenance and repair of the outfall
  • Inform publicly when a spill occurs, indicating the point of spill and the cause.
  • Withdraw the blue flag, while the situation of contamination and discharges continues
  • Apply measures that involve the decrease of the recreational nautical sector of motor boats
  • Review business opening licenses linked to the rental of jet skis, jet boats, water skiing, etc. and control compliance with regulations.

  1. Eva Blasco Pascual says:

I very much agree with what is requested by the environmental group

  2. Marcos Ortiz says:

It is undoubtedly necessary to improve the sewage system and prevent the arrival of sewage to the coast. The stormwater sewage system is polluted every time it rains due to the large amount of rubbish found in the gutters and the lack of filters, which sift the stormwater before it reaches the river or the Fontana canal... that's how it is for decades… Everything is a matter of maintenance and an investment in necessary infrastructures. The cleaning of the beach and the surroundings also has to be more intense, there is a lack of cleanliness, there are too many uncivil attitudes of young and old, as regards nautical activities, boat users must be required to be scrupulous, to avoid discharges of any kind and that offenders be punished. The Arenal beach is a family space and should remain as such, losing the Blue Flag would not be a good claim for Jávea, the Municipal Authorities must move and correct the problems quickly.

I would like to know if these environmentalists who drink or who prick themselves. To go carefully. Threatening sectors without any sense. Nightlife??? You will not be echo what??? Look in the mirror. I used to believe with part of you. But every day you show that you don't know where you are. How easy it is to criticize. What to hear🙈🙈🙈

  4. Margherita says:

I've been in Javea for a week, where I have a house, and I've never seen water as cloudy, dirty and smelly as it is these days, even though high season hasn't arrived yet! Serious measures must be taken or the Arenal beach will become a dunghill. They have also drained the channel and dumped everything on the beach: mud, stones, algae... never seen!

  5. Ana says:

    Completely agree! Thank you environmentalists.

  6. The Nautical Sector responds: says:

«Apply measures that suppose the decrease of the recreational nautical sector of motor boats» ????

But candid souls, how can you think of saying such nonsense?

Do you want to sink the Nautical Sector because in Jávea there is shit on the beach? REALLY?

It is not a question of doing the subnormal, more than is due, the PROBLEM is the inability of politicians to solve the problems. The sea is polluted from our sewers, let's not blame the ships, a little brains, please.

What a gang you are made of, insane !!!!

  7. Adelaide says:

If it continues like this, in a couple of years Jávea will be a real garbage dump and well, let's see if tourists still arrive… How sad.

    • Begoña Alvarez'_ossorio says:

The fundamental problem is the sewage system in Javea. Or rather the lack of sewage system in the first mountain. Still at this point we continue with septic tanks. And that does filter and pollute.
But the City Council does nothing about it.
As well as the capacity of the sewage treatment plant, which since the 60s continues as it was built and the population of its surroundings has increased considerably.
If things were done with more foresight from the City Hall, we would not have these problems.
Less nonsense on the surface and more money for sewer
