IROX presents allegations to the Ministry regarding the management plan of La Marina's LICs

16 September 2020 - 07: 37

L'Institut de Recerca Oceanografica de Xàbia has sent to the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge the allegations to the Ministerial Order on the management plans of the LICs (Places of Community Importance) -marine spaces of La Marina.

IROX has always defended the importance of making decisions about the protection of our environment, based on objective data, which must be obtained through scientific marine research, and not on assumptions or preconceptions. That is why we advise that studies be carried out on each of these spaces in order to make the most efficient decisions regarding their protection. The IROX allegations document proposes a total of seven measures, among which are:

- Urgent need to control dirty water, treatment plants and homes, which not only endanger the balance of the larval system of many species in La Marina, but also affects the health of the people themselves.

- Creation of a Governing Body, with the participation of public entities, sailors, scientists with sanctioning power so that the proposed measures can be controlled. This body will have to have effective surveillance with duly qualified personnel to avoid infractions such as those we have suffered this summer.

- And with regard to artisanal fishing, from l'Irox they request any measure adopted to seek the balance between the protection of the environment and the activities that have been practiced for centuries, making them sustainable but not unviable.

Likewise, l'IROX requests the elimination of the 6-year term of the regulations that are adopted and that constant monitoring be maintained. And one of these measures would be the declaration of the Portitxol Fauna Microrreserve that we already proposed previously.
