Dénia Hospital opened yesterday its Laboratory of Molecular Oncology, the only of its kind available in Valencia for the diagnosis of cancer patients outside the university and referral hospitals.
The presentation was attended by the Manager of the Department of Health Dénia, Ángel Giménez, the Mayor of Jávea, José ChulviThe Vice Chancellor for Research at the University CEU Cardenal Herrera, Ignacio Pérez Roger, the Vice-Consul of the United Kingdom in Alicante, Elizabeth Bell and Coordinator Cancer Care Jávea, Eileen Saville.
In the laboratory of Molecular Oncology will be held both genetic studies to clinical support to the oncology department, such as data analysis for scientific production, because it has a genetic sequencer that allows processing oncological samples to determine the genetic profile of each tumor.
Thus it can be supplied on demand chemotherapy for cancer patients, resulting in greater safety. In addition many of the side effects caused by the drugs used in cancer treatment, such as cytostatics are minimized.
This project come true, is the result of close collaboration between Marina Health, CEU Cardenal Herrera University of Valencia and the NGO Cancer Care Javea, which contributed 245.000 euros for this project to be carried out, "We have been collecting money for eight years for this laboratory", Saville said.
The laboratory work in which a multidisciplinary group of oncologists, pathologists and pharmaceuticals, commanded by a biotecnólogo, also be responsible for genetic studies for analysis of cancer markers, in order to determine whether there are genetic mutations of tumors.
