HLA San Carlos de Dénia is the first hospital in the Valencian Community that has the test Brecanrisk, a non-invasive technique that would be able to predict a patient's risk of breast cancer. This tool is based on a complex algorithm that uses the genetic information provided by a sample of the patient's blood, breast density from mammography and information about their personal and family history.
Dr. Begoña Patiño, surgeon specializing in breast cancer and responsible for the Breast Unit of the HLA San Carlos hospital in Dénia states that "The test could change the way patients perform their breast check and follow-up".
According to the specialist, thanks to the existence of this tool, patients have more information about their individual risk, which allows a more personalized follow-up for each patient. The genetic analysis of Brecandisk is based on the knowledge of the existence of up to 120 mini genetic alterations(SNPs) that can increase between two and three times the genetic risk of a patient and that are more frequent in the population.
Both the convenience of the test, and the interpretation of the result, should always be carried out under the advice of a breast specialist, who recommends the specific medical guidelines applicable to each patient according to their type of risk and making early diagnosis possible. .
Until now, the BRCA genetic test can detect the existence of a mutation related to a high risk of breast and ovarian cancer. However, despite the fact that this mutation indicates a high risk of suffering
disease, its presence is quite infrequent among the population. The criteria for conducting this test were very strict and, in many cases, families with several cases of breast cancer, gave a negative result in this test.

A test that is especially indicated in healthy women with a family history of breast cancer (one or more cases in the family), high breast density, personal history of precancerous lesions or women with a family history of BRCA negative breast cancer.
