Oral halitosis: what is it and how is it treated?

05 July 2022 - 08: 55

Oral halitosis is a fairly common problem that often concerns patients of the Doctoras Gandía dental clinic.

The appearance of halitosis produces uneasiness in patients due to the possible health implications, and the psychological repercussions that can lead them to situations of personal and social isolation.

What types of halitosis are there?

Currently, studies show that there are different types of halitosis depending on its origin. Thus, we can distinguish between genuine or true halitosis, pseudohalitosis y halitophobia. In turn, genuine halitosis can be classified as physiological or pathological halitosis, the latter being able to be of oral or extraoral origin.

In approximately 90% of cases of genuine halitosis, the origin of the bad odor is in the mouth. Of these, around 60% of cases are associated with some type of periodontal disease (genuine pathological oral halitosis), so the role of professionals in the dental area is key in the control of these patients.

We currently know that the appearance of genuine halitosis of oral origin is mainly due to the presence of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) in the air expelled from the oral cavity. The production mechanism of these CSVs is directly associated with the protein metabolism of certain bacteria. The location where this process mainly takes place is the posterior area of the lingual dorsum, although it can also occur to a lesser extent in other locations, such as periodontal pockets.

If you have any of these problems, do not hesitate to visit the Dental Clinic Drs. Gandia, its professional team will help you and solve all your doubts.
