At the meeting of BREXIT, Advising Britons to be registered

More than 100 British people, residents of Xàbia, have attended the informative meeting organized by the Town hall to clarify doubts about the BREXIT. The British Consul, Sarah-Jane Morris, was present at the meeting. Mayor of Xàbia, José Chulvi, the Councilor for Foreign Residents, Doris Courcelles and the lawyers Jonathan Lambery and Jaume Sendra, as well as the specialist in the field of health, Martyn Standing.

The British Consul has emphasized the importance of being registered in the register before the situation of the BREXIT. Morris has analyzed, together with the residents, the consequences that the BREXIT and has indicated that they must be calm since their situation will not change in the medium term.

In addition, Sarah-Jane Morris has indicated that from the consulate a study will be made on the number of British residents in Spain and what is their situation so that their interests in the negotiations with the British government are taken into account. In this sense Sarah-Jane Morris has pointed out that the case of Spain is very important, since it is the country of the European Union where more foreigners reside, especially in coastal areas such as Xàbia.

The Councilor for Foreign Relations, Doris Courcelles, also recalled that residents have to renew the register every five years while non-residents have to do it every two years.

Both the British consul and the lawyer Jonathan Lambert, have wanted to appeal to calm the foreign population, "Since the negotiations have not yet begun, the situation will not change for at least two years".

For its part, the mayor of Xàbia, José Chulvi, has assured that the City Council will not leave aside British residents in this difficult time and will do everything possible to defend their rights. In this way, at the last plenary session, a motion was approved by the mayor asking for a bilateral agreement between the British and Spanish governments to alleviate the effects of the BREXIT.
