El Poble Nou de Benitatxell, in its commitment to protecting the coast, has signed a collaboration agreement with IROX (Oceanographic Research Institute Xàbia), which gives the amount of € 1.000 to protect underwater rock dels Felius, of great ecological and fishing value. The objective of this agreement is to conduct a study on the Roca dels Felius and be able to declare it a 'protected marine area'.
The mayor of Poble Nou de Benitatxell, Josep Femenia, and the councilor of Culture and Environment, Manolo Segarra, have indicated that the institute will be in charge of defining the current state of the rock as well as carrying out the most appropriate measures to preserve the marine environment and organize the best conditions for sustainable fishing. And is that as they have explained "is currently overfished from a fishing point of view, so this agreement is of great importance to preserve the marine environment in the area."
La Roca dels Felius It is located near the Cabo de la Nao, with an area of approximately 60 and 110 between meters deep. It presents a particular ecosystem and of great underwater riches. It is an emblematic enclave for the area, with a long fishing tradition in the Marina Alta.
