Hospital HLA San Carlos inaugurates a new unit of Psychiatry. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Spanish Society of Biological Psychiatry, depression will be the first cause of disability in the world in 2025. The data show that one in four Spaniards will suffer a mental disorder throughout their lives.
Aware of this situation, HLA San Carlos launches a new unit for the specialty of Psychiatry. The priority of this new service is to provide quality and multidisciplinary care from a biopsychosocial approach, through individualized attention and a psychopharmacological or psychotherapeutic treatment adapted to each patient.
Julio Costa, specialist in psychiatry at HLA San Carlos, points out that "From the hospital we offer effective treatments aimed at avoiding medication abuse and ensuring comprehensive patient care by a team composed of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and family doctors, among other professionals. This integrative approach benefits the clinical evolution of our patients and aims to improve, at least in our region, the negative scenario that some published statistical data show ".
Fight mental disorders since adolescence
The new HLA San Carlos psychiatry specialty will cover both adult patients and adolescents. A sector of primordial age, since, according to the WHO, 1 of each 2 cases of mental disorder are reflected before the 14 years. And if these are underestimated, they will extend to adult life, affecting education, work and relationships with friends, couples or relatives.
Currently, mental disorders and substance use disorders are the leading cause of disability in the world. Likewise, half of people with mental illnesses are not treated or do not receive
the proper treatment.
The stigmatization, the lack of resources, the scant support of some families and the ignorance surrounding mental illnesses are widespread in our society, making the care of these patients more complex.
