Silence, nurse delivering medication. That is the slogan of the vests that the nurses wear and the objective of the Hospital de Dénia during the distribution of the medication to the patients. And, according to one study, in Spain the incidence of adverse effects related to medication exceeds 35%.
In the last months of February and March, a research work was started in which six researchers participated who counted and classified the interruptions during the distribution of the medication. First they recorded the number of incidents without a vest and later with the nurse carrying the legend of Attention. Do not bother. Preparing medication.
The main conclusion was that with the vests placed, the risk of interruptions during the administration of the medication was reduced by 27%. Among the main sources of distortion include: communication between professionals, family members of patients, satisfaction of the needs of patients, obtaining materials or phone calls or from the doorbell of the room.
It must be borne in mind that Nursing dedicates 40% of its time to the administration of medication. The study carried out by the nurses of the Dénia Hospital has just been presented in the framework of the XXIX National Conference of Nurses Managers which is celebrated these days in San Sebastian.
