Dr. Rafael Sanjuán from the Dénia Health Department receives 'Cum Laude' in his doctoral thesis

May 09 from 2018 - 11: 58

The specialist in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology of the Department of Health of Dénia, Rafael Sanjuán, made the reading of his doctoral thesis on the Clinical assessment of Clostridium Hystolyticum collagenase for the
treatment of Dupuytren's disease in the short and medium term
and in it he received the grade of outstanding Cum Laude.

The Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology of the Department of Health of Dénia uses the Collagenase Injection to treat Dupuytren's disease, a pathology that prevents the complete extension of any of the fingers of the hand. Each year in the Dénia Hospital, more than fifty patients are treated through this novel technique, a minimally invasive procedure that avoids surgical intervention and facilitates rapid recovery of the patient.

This treatment is used for the disease of Dupuytren, a pathology caused by the formation of nodules in the palm of the hand, which ends with the retraction of one or several phalanges. Collagenase is an enzyme that degrades collagen and eliminates that kind of rope that holds the finger and prevents its extension. The process is relatively simple, according to Dr. Rafael Sanjuán: "First we inject the collagenase in the affected area through a fine syringe and wait for a period of 24 to 48 hours for the enzyme to take effect. After that time, we extend the finger until the hand regains its natural position".
