The channel of Gorgos, weakness in cleanups ravines and riverbeds

With the arrival of autumn and the probability of heavy rains, the municipal department of the environment of Xàbia, through the brigades of the social employment plan, has carried out an exhaustive cleaning of many of the ravines and streams of the town that are located near urban centers or residential areas.

However, there is an area that continues to resist the consistory. This is the Gorgos river basin, especially at its mouth at the height of the Via Augusta. Despite the complaints from residents and the municipal awareness of the overcrowding and the existence of an invasive South American species of sugarcane that is favored by high temperatures, the municipal Department of the Environment has admitted that it cannot do anything since maintenance of this area "is an obligation of the Júcar Hydrographic Confederation" and the town hall "It doesn't have the heavy machinery needed to uproot them."

Therefore, eliminating the existing cane density is impossible for municipal brigades. "Cañar pruning is not effective since removing the dry leaves space and feeds the sprouts," acknowledges the municipal department. Last year they did try to carry out this cleaning, eliminating around 500 eucalyptus trees that grew in the riverbed.

In this sense, the City Council will submit a new request to the Confederation to comply with the preventive cleaning of the river where it belongs.

The areas in which the cleaning has been carried out are: The ravines from Puchol to Cuesta San Antonio and the Corona and Tossalet urbanisations. The Pinosol ravine from Francesc Gimeno street to the Saladar and in the Saladar's own scrapping system to the sea. Lastly, the streams that drain the Montgo - "barranqueres". as it passes through the Camí Vell de Gata and the Jesús Pobre road.
