The 'boom' of the BatuCam Xàbia

17 September 2023 - 08: 20

African and Brazilian rhythms take over the streets of Xàbia. The newly created BatuCam is a success. In just nine months, 35 people are part of this new group that belongs to the Center Artístic Musical de Xàbia. And the thing is, Xàbia couldn't stop having this musical group.

Their music is catchy and invites you to party. And that was the reason that prompted Lupe Sorribes to create a batucada group. The idea arose two years ago at a musicians' dinner during the celebration of Santa Cecilia. Although at first the initiative did not work, Lupe's enthusiasm for carrying this objective forward continued. And so it was, in November 2022, a year after releasing the first note, the batucada was created. It started with 20 people, without a doubt, a large number to be the beginning and take the first steps or rather, the first musical rhythms.

It was in January 2023 when the BatuCam started ringing. Formed by mothers and fathers of young musicians, and with the unconditional support of Juan Antonio Sapena as president of the Center Artístic Musical de Xàbia and the board of directors, they took percussion instruments to fill the streets and events with life in any corner of the world. .

Without experience but with great desire and enthusiasm, the BatuCam is becoming a musical icon in Xàbia to which many want to belong. From its beginnings until now, just a few months ago, the Xàbia batucada already has a waiting list to enter. «The fact that there is a cap is only for organizational reasons. Furthermore, we are at the beginning and we must maintain a structure. We know that it is something new and that it attracts attention, attracts, but we also demand commitment. As fathers and mothers of musicians, we know the sacrifice and discipline that music entails and we want the BatuCam to take hold," highlights Lupe.

And learning batucada has many benefits. It is an activity to socialize, learn to play percussion instruments in a group, fun, burns calories and above all, although it may not seem like it, de-stressing. Music has a therapeutic purpose, so it is a perfect activity if you want to reduce stress and anxiety levels. The batucada does not have scores, but is played by ear, hence no musical knowledge is required, so you have to be concentrated (it stimulates memory) and attentive to the sounds and rhythms so that the music sounds and transmits the character. festive for which it is characterized.

Repeniques, tambourines, snare drum, agogo, chocolalos, surdos 1-2-3 (drums) are some of the musical instruments that fill with joy each of the places where the BatuCam plays, since its purpose is to "contribute to the party" , indicates the president of the formation.

Sorribes tells how the beginnings of this group were; «We started with buckets of paint and making the first public appearance with only three rehearsals; "It was in the Volta a Peu de Xàbia 2023." And that was the starting signal. Then came the performance at the Cursa de la Dona, at the FestiCAM, where it can be said that it was the official debut, in the bullfighting session at the Bous al Carrer de Fogueres and the last one, at the Bous a la Mar. The president of the BatuCam, Lupe Sorribes, reports that «several of the actions have been on their own initiative, but we have new and surprising short-term plans; and the success we are having is due to the entire group, and of course, to Olga Sales coordinator, Txus Serrano secretary, Ramón Climent vice president and Martí Mulet as teacher and very important figure.

Now it's non-stop. The BatuCam Xàbia has become visible and will continue to set the tone and set the pace wherever it goes because the enthusiasm and desire of this new group will make the music never stop.

I understand that in this municipality parties, noise and dirt and everything that entails are the order of the day but I think it is a good idea, music helps the mind and, as they have said, the batucada helps improve the memory and concentration, they have also mentioned that they have a waiting list, this could help create a group for each urban center of the municipality since Arenal is very forgotten, the fact that there are people who are interested and encouraged is good since that all the time they dedicate to the batucada it is possible that they remove it from other habits that may be harmful to them, just one piece of advice is that they do not consume alcohol or smoke or anything while they are performing even if the people around them are party since it will be much better for their mind, their memory and concentration and they will be able to be more attentive if there is a mistake or it will be easier for them to see what aspects to improve in their performance, greetings

Do not be ignorant or exaggerated, I have simply highlighted some aspects that, in my personal opinion, may help some people. It has been proven that carrying out activities that we really like helps improve our organization and our habits, improves concentration, etc. Whatever the activity, as long as they are healthy. I understand that batucada is not seen as a professional and organized musical training, but it is possible that there are some people who, when doing this activity, see that it is something they like and the time they dedicate to this activity will not be dedicated to other things that they like. It distracts, it distracts them, it leads them to have bad feelings, etc. And I present everything as possibilities, since a person who is totally organized and has good habits decides to take part in this activity to de-stress, which is also beneficial. I understand that you don't like it, I can't handle it either but you have to be realistic

          So how much time?

Silvia, to say a reality that is scientifically and psychologically proven, do I already have to be part of that group? I have been living outside the municipality for years, I read the news because I still have relatives living there and it is the place where I grew up, according to your logic, by arguing positive aspects about developing activities I have to be part of it, great, now I understand why the municipality is As it is, you go from one extreme to the other without stopping to think about what may or may not be healthy for citizens. My logic is that the more sports and educational offerings there are, the more options people will have to do something that enriches them culturally and that they really like it without having to travel to other places and, above all, the time they dedicate to that activity will be taken away from other unnecessary and harmful activities, especially for teenagers who really need something to make them focus, I hope that you know how to understand what I want to say and not what you want to understand, good day

How is he not ignorant? If I believed what you wrote, yes, it would be hahahaha... but is your comment ironic? Or not ? Does giving the Bongo improve festive erotic performance?

I love the emotion with which the roots of La Terreta are embraced.
    What level.

    • Ignacio says:

The grandmothers crying on the corners remembering the batucadas that their grandfathers played for them when they were fifth grade, that was a century ago. Very emotive.

  3. Ignacio says:

Of course it is a success, here anything that is noise, party and fun triumphs. Regardless of whether this group is good or not. You don't have to try very hard either. It has always been known that batucadas originate from the Spanish Levant.
