About a 15% of the population suffers from diabetes

November 15 from 2016 - 13: 50

The Dénia Health Department celebrated World Diabetes Day yesterday with preventive tests and talks aimed at the population, with the aim of measuring the risk that the user has of suffering from the disease. More than 50 people responded to these questions.

As reported, it is estimated that type 2 diabetes, closely related to lifestyle habits, affects 12-14% of the population, while type 1 does about 0,2%. Through a series of questions related to weight, diet, family history and physical exercise, a score is obtained that determines the risk of being diabetic.

School Diabetes: Do not prohibit but to form

Likewise, the Dénia Health Department has launched the Diabetes School this year to support diabetic patients in the Marina Alta. The group school is held monthly with patients with similar profiles.

Healthcare professionals are part of the School of Diabetes, defined as coaches. “We do not prohibit, but we train. We have gone from a medicine based on prohibition to one that pivots on self-care "said the doctor.

"In all sessions we teach patients to administer insulin doses based on their glycemic index, type of food they are going to eat and time of day when they are going to take it",, explained Dr. Teresa Pedro, endocrine of the health department.

Today in the market there are countless computer applications available that help to calculate the insulin dose for each food and personal circumstance of the patient. Others even monitor the patient 24 hours a day using a patch that is attached to the shoulder.
