Benitatxell goes a step further with recycling and installs containers for domestic oil

18 March 2019 - 10: 51

The Poble Nou of Poble Nou de Benitatxell continues to promote recycling. On this occasion, he takes another step and installs two collection points for used cooking oil in strategic areas of the municipality. One of them next to the underground containers of the Plaça de les Pesqueres and the other in the Mercat de la Plaça. To favor filtering, one funnel per dwelling will be distributed free of charge.

The users must first store the used cooking oil, once cold, in a plastic bottle of up to 2,5 liters. Once they have filled the bottle, they should close it well and place it in one of the closest containers.

The Councilor for the Environment, Jorge Pascual, explained that this measure is intended to facilitate the work of residents in recycling and raise awareness among the population in general about the importance of recycling and convert El Poble Nou de Benitatxell in an environmentally sustainable municipality .

Contamination

One person generates around 10 liters of used vegetable oil per year. If it is thrown into the sewer network, it would have the capacity to contaminate 10.000 liters of water. The oil, being less dense than water, is located on it, generating a sheet that tends to occupy all the possible surface, preventing the natural oxygenation of water, which affects the aquatic flora and fauna.

Likewise, avoiding that the oil ends up in the pipes supposes a saving in the management of the sewage treatment plants, since it is calculated that to purify every liter of oil poured to the sewage network has a cost of 2,45 euros.
