A doctor from Gata de Gorgos creates a free APP to detect arrhythmias

February 20 from 2018 - 15: 48

Arrhytmial is a new free application that allows detecting arrhythmias in patients with heart disease. Thanks to the creation of an application (APP) developed by Dr. Carlos Mulet, primary care physician at the Health Center of Gata de Gorgos, atrial fibrillation can be detected through an optical heart rate monitor for sports use. The new APP allows to control the heart rate 24 hours of the day with only a heart rate monitor, connected via Bluetooth to the mobile.

Until now, extrasystoles, bradycardias and tachycardias were monitored through very expensive and complex devices, such as holters. The application, Dr. Mulet emphasizes, "When it detects an anomaly in the heart rate, it sends a real-time warning to the person in charge of the control or monitoring of the patient; in addition to a geolocation signal ".

90.000 cases undiagnosed

The most characteristic arrhythmia is atrial fibrillation and it is responsible for the majority of ischemic strokes with a prevalence of 4.4% in the Spanish population over 40 years of age. It is associated with high mortality and morbidity, and it is estimated that in Spain more than one million people have atrial fibrillation, of which more than 90.000 are undiagnosed.

According to Dr. Mulet, "Ischemic stroke is a very disabling pathology and, once restored, it is very insidious and complicated. In addition, the treatment represents an important economic expense for the health system ".

The application, which is part of the doctoral thesis of the Gata de Gorgos doctor, has been developed over three years, together with clinical studies in 350 patients and associated with a very complex algorithm. The APP has been launched with the collaboration of the universities of Valencia, Jaume I and Polytechnic of Valencia.
