Union in Xàbia for 'a sea without butts'

August 06 from 2020 - 16: 37

The Rotary Club of Jávea, the Yacht Club and the Town hall They have come together with a common objective: to eliminate the sea butts that pollute so much. This is the campaign that the Rotary Club of Jávea has promoted in its environmental care project under the motto 'For a sea without butts'.

This solidarity group has joined the Club Nautico de Javea who, for years, works in the cleaning of beaches and seabeds, and the departments of Tourism, Environment, Beaches and Services of Xàbia. The three entities launch an environmental awareness campaign aimed at bathers and users of smoking boats. An initiative that will begin this weekend with the distribution of cardboard ashtrays at the entrance to the Arenal Beach.

The main objective is to have a sea free of cigarette butts, "This residue is very difficult to remove by cleaning machines, as well as by human hands, since it is easily introduced through the sand and ends up polluting the sea", explained Luis Santos, president of Rotary.

Santos has indicated that a total of 10.000 units of these disposable ashtrays have been produced so that the
smoking bathers use it while they are on the beach and when they finish depositing the waste in the methacrylate containers that will be installed at the exit of the beaches, "becoming an impressive visual message to become aware of not discarding the cigarette butt in any public space".

The distribution of this original recyclable ashtray will be carried out by volunteers from the Rotary Club Jávea and groups such as Xàbia Neta during the mornings of the weekends of the month of August and until September 15 and during the week, the controllers will be in charge of reinforcing this work.

From the Yacht Club they will be delivered to their members when they go out to sea. "For years we have organized cleaning days on the coast and what is collected the most are cigarette butts" The entity's manager, Luís Nogueroles, has stated.

Smoke free beach

For his part, the Beaches councilor, Tony Miragall, has indicated that the department is working on an ordinance so that the Xàbia beaches are part of 'Beaches without smoke', "an initiative that we have already reflected in the posters of safe beaches installed in this summer season".

The question is not to give cardboard ashtrays, but to install more bins, so that people do not have to walk 200m to throw out a cigarette butt, which you know nobody is going to do. You want a clean sea, because more workers to clean beaches and fishing grounds who are ashamed, and also divers to remove the garbage from under the water, or does it not matter because it cannot be seen?
And the port that is not cleaned? More shit than there is not in the Ramblars.
It seems to me an absurd, useless and populist measure.
Oh, and the smoke-free beach ... XD, what the hell do you care if I smoke a cigarette? Kids bother me more with their reggaeton.
Stop forbidding people what you don't like, we then complain about Franco.
    PATHETIC

At the end of the afternoon in the area of the Arenal chairs and sunbeds it was "strewn" with cigarette butts. Not that ashtrays are missing. We don't have social intelligence.

  2. Xavi says:

People are also helped by taking care of their home. That by now we must be explaining that everyone's home is the environment, it explains why we have pandemics, DANAS, climate change, fires ... There is a lot of culture in this country.

It seems to me a magnificent initiative. Everything that poisons the sea poisons us.

  3. Marta says:

With the one that is falling it would not be better to dedicate all the effort, time and money in helping people and not spending on superfluous things.
