29 March 2019 - 09: 00

Do you know the dangers of the processionary for your maskers? Do you know what the symptoms and treatment are if they come in contact with it? Do you need advice to try to prevent your pet from suffering it? Sanavet It explains everything we need to know about this caterpillar so dangerous for our animals.

What is it?

The processionary is a caterpillar with stinging hairs that have a poison that is released when the hair is stuck in the skin, causing a strong allergic reaction with edematous inflammation and necrosis. Between the months of February and April, this caterpillar descends from the nest to the ground in procession to bury itself and follow its biological cycle.

What are the symptoms?

As explained in Sanavet, our pet will be nervous, because of the itching and discomfort, with excessive salivation and a swelling of the lips, eyes, tongue or head may appear. Even in the most severe cases, anaphylactic shock and suffocation can occur.

How can they be affected?

The contact of our pets with these caterpillars can occur by different means, such as through direct contact with the mouth and tongue, when going to browse the caterpillars. Also, it can occur when the hairs are detached and flow in the air, causing eye irritation or when the nests fall to the ground, and ridding the hairs in the environment.

What treatment is appropriate?

If your Mascosta is affected by the Processionary, from Sanavet they warn us of the importance of going to the veterinarian urgently. In addition, they recommend that we immediately wash the infected area with hot water since the heat destroys the toxin. Without rubbing so that, if there is any caterpillar hair, do not break it and release the toxin.

Can it be prevented?

The most effective form of prevention is to avoid pine areas during the months of February, March and April. In addition, we must monitor if we have nests of these caterpillars in the trees of our garden. If you have them, you should prune the branches where they are housed, always in a moderate way so that they do not fall and the hairs are scattered.
