Monuments of Xàbia as you have never seen them before

August 07 from 2022 - 01: 22

The cut-outs have been, for decades, the entertainment of several generations. Armed with scissors, paper, glue, patience and some skill, adults and adults spent hours shaping any figure. And from there comes the passion for 3D paper architecture by José Cardona, the Persian.

Born in Valencia, but based in Xàbia, José Cardona, a lover of comics and cut-outs since he was a child, was considered an "unclassifiable" artist; the creator of creators and a different cartoonist. From his love for Xàbia and the region of La Marina Alta, a great legacy was born, among which the great cut-outs of him stand out.

The Xàbia Fortress Church is one of his most significant works. His three-dimensional paper creations were authentic. 'El Persa' reflected each and every one of the details of the cut-out 'monumentals' that he made.

But his peculiar art kept the main buildings of Xàbia alive, such as: the Calvary Chapel of Xàbia, the old Casa del Cable, the now disappeared Castell de Sant Jordi, els Riu Rau or the old Pont de Triana.

But if we turn our eyes to the emblematic buildings of the municipalities of the region, Cardona also captured to scale, forming part of this classic art: the Sala dels Jurats i Justícia de Teulada, the Castell de Moraira, the Hermitage Divina Pastora de Teulada, the Town hall de Dénia, Els Porxens de Pedreguer, the Hermitage of Santissim Crist del Calvari in Gata de Gorgos, the Hermitage of San Salvador de Calp or the whitewashed profile of Altea la Vella, among others, without neglecting and forgetting the three-dimensional designs of large Spanish monuments such as the Plaza de Toros in Valencia or the Cine Doré in Madrid.

Undoubtedly, José Cardona or as he was known, El Persa, was unique in the so-called 'ephemeral press'. His passion for art and imagination led him to dedicate himself to illustration, surprising everyone with great and imaginative creations, not only with cut-outs but also with coloring booklets, sticker albums, comics, decks of cards, postcards or simple origami figures such as airplanes. Cardona created a series of origami airplanes, each one more impressive, highlighting the Mosca airplane of the Second Republic.

Last June marked the 10th anniversary of the death of this unique artist whose means of expression was creating and cutting. His involvement in Xàbia was full, leaving a great legacy.
