Just a week ago, María Cardona, a handball player from Xàbia, was proclaimed champion of Spain together with her teammates from the Valencian Youth Team, in Cantabrian lands. Her achievement has not gone unnoticed by the Town hall nor for her neighbors, who will have the opportunity to congratulate the player at a reception that will take place at the town hall, this Wednesday, January 15, at 19:XNUMX p.m.
María, at the age of 17, attended a Spanish Championship for the Regional Teams for the second time. The first was when she was a cadet player, so she had already had a similar experience, although on that occasion she could not get the title.
Cardona started practicing this sport 10 years ago at the Graüll school with the coach Pep Hierro, who formed a team that competed in the Minijocs of the Marina Alta. Hand in hand with this coach, she grew as a player, achieving important successes both in the field of handball and beach handball.
On the beach, with the Xàbia team, she was proclaimed champion of Spain in cadets in the 2018 edition held in Laredo.
His projection did not go unnoticed by the technicians of the Valencian National Team who granted him a scholarship to be at the Cheste Technification Center. Last season he signed to play in the CB Morvedre de Sagunto, initially to play in the youth team, although he did in the second senior team. In fact, he had the opportunity to debut in the highest category, the Honor Division, Liga Guerrera Iberdrola, at age 16.
This time he was not lucky because a knee injury slowed his progression and this made him sign for CB Benidorm, current team where he plays both in the youth team and in the senior team that plays in the Second Division.
María Cardona belongs to a generation of players who left the quarry xabiera and now, curiously, are playing outside the municipality, specifically in Altea, for not being able to use the facilities of the xabiero pavilion.
