The findings of the 'Cova de les Bruixes' in Benitatxell are presented at the MARQ in Alicante

22 December 2017 - 03: 06

The archaeologists, Miquel Sánchez Signes and Anna Viciach i Safont, presented the works carried out between 2015 and 2017 in the Cova de les Bruixes from El Poble Nou de Benitatxell. This paper was framed within the VI Days of Archeology of the Valencian Community that took place in the Archaeological Museum of Alicante.

The Cova de les Bruixes is an Iberian-Moorish and Andalusian site. Occupations have been documented for 2.200 years. In 2001, an archaeological intervention was already carried out and painted Iberian ceramics, Terra sigillata Roman ceramics and imported vessels from Italian Campania were found.

The excavation of the 2016, promoted by the Department of Culture, in charge of Manolo Segarra, brought to light an Andalusian farmstead and its old agrarian structures. Archaeologists discovered the wall of the sheepfold in which the herders kept livestock in the Iberian, Roman and Hispano-Muslim periods. In September of the 2017, three silos that were key to the farm's economy came to light, as cereals and legumes were stored. They are located on the north terrace of the site.
