La xabiera Tamara Moreno tells us how the coronavirus situation lives in Australia

30 March 2020 - 08: 35

We know how the situation of the coronavirus is in Spain, but we want to go further and learn, through the testimonies of the migrants from Xabia, how they are experiencing it in other countries.

Today we move to Australia with Tamara Moreno Martínez. This xabiera has been in the Gold Coast for five months, an Australian coastal city located about 70 kilometers south of Brisbane, in the state of Queensland. Tamara moved to improve English while studying and working, but ...

QUESTION: How is the situation in that country?

ANSWER:The situation in Australia is not as alarming as that of many countries, there are still infections, deaths, but on a small scale (today, Monday, 3980 people are infected, 16 deaths and 244 recovered). It is true that there is less population, the climate is warm and I think that the people and the government know what they have to do and how to face and act in this situation.

Q: What measures have been carried out so far?

R: The measures are like that of the rest of the countries, the hospitality sector closed, with the exception of hotels, still presenting a low rate of reservations and many cancellations, and all types of business facing the public also closed until further notice. Speaking of education, which is my responsibility, until a few days ago some schools were still open, the one that I witnessed closed its doors last week, with the possibility of giving us online classes, like the rest of schools and academies. And in the hospitals here, on the Gold Coast, they maintain a normal rhythm.

Q: What do you think of these measures and what do you think of how they have been managed?

R: It is being managed little by little, the government takes necessary measures every day. It does not restrict us from going out into the street, but if it informs us that people are aware and there are no large groups gathered, do not exchange houses, and we use the corresponding hygiene for this situation, being cautious and conscious basically.

Specifically in Gold Coast, which is the State of Queensland, it is the least affected. Therefore, the Government at the beginning of the week chose to close connections with different states in Australia. The government is also managing a series of financial aid for those who pay housing rent, have worked or are studying, but which are still in process for the moment, and we do not know if they will be made effective.

Q: Do the people there comply with them?

R: People here are more aware than in my country (Spain), when I still had a low rate of those affected. People, without drastic measures, are already acting for their own health and for fear of getting it.

Q: How do they behave in the situation?

R: People carry it in the best way, public transport is still in operation and people, although not all, tend to keep their distance. It does not happen in supermarkets, there is no measure either by the government or by people, it is like going shopping on a normal day. But it is true that people take more shelter in their homes and choose to stay more isolated, in addition there is a large percentage who wear the mask daily.

Q: How are you living there and being away from home?

R: The truth is that I am carrying it very calm, my family worries me more than my own person. Despite the fact that the virus spreads and spreads quickly, I feel safer here than in Spain due to the fact that there are fewer infections. The important thing is not to dramatize, respect what is imposed on us, act in the best way and continue.

Q: What do you know about what is happening in Spain?

R: In Spain the situation is very critical, it is on the crest of the wave, and I hope it will drop soon. I am kept informed by family and friends, and I know that despite the fact that it is hard to hear every day that infections and deaths are increasing, and that the quarantine process is lengthening, it must be done for the good of all.

Q: What news do you get?

R: Mainly the number of affected and deceased that grows every day. That is the most important fact. Also the situation of the hospitals, and the great work that people who dedicate themselves body and soul to every patient that arrives, exposing themselves to a great risk of contagion, and of which, there are already many infected. Also news of daily life such as in supermarkets, where a specific number of people can enter to buy, that only one occupant is allowed in the car, and the fines that can be imposed if you do not respect the rules.

Q: Did you plan to return or did you plan to return soon and now you have to wait?

R: I do not plan to return until my visa is finished. Like other people, they were very overwhelmed and affected by this situation, and they made the decision to leave the country, I really took it in the best way and seeing the situation that Spain was experiencing, I did not consider returning at any time .

I don't know what my situation will be like here in a couple of months, and if when I intend to leave, it will be so easy. I just hope that all this improves and we can live without this worry and without this uncertainty and above all that we are safe.
