The Black Tarantula occupies the pools of Xàbia, have you found one?

August 10 from 2017 - 12: 20

For a few days, Xàbia.com Has received several comments about the appearance of new and large black spiders in the pools. Apparently, this type of arachnid is harmless and only appears in the summer season, but it is clear that its presence is not pleasant.

After the alarm of some readers before the appearance of this animal, we have requested information to the municipal biologist of Xàbia, Ignaci Astor, who has provided all the details. "This is the black spider or black tarantula, very common in country houses, which leave their hiding places when you squeeze the heat to drink water", Explains the biologist.

Astor adds that it is normal to find them in the swimming pools or irrigation areas "and usually drowned". On the dangerousness of this arachnid, the biologist claims that it is harmless, "They can bite with their chelycers if they are surprised or bothered. The bite is annoying and cases of inflammation are known in sensitive people."

And although this animal has a bad reputation for its appearance, "It is very useful in homes because of their insect diet because they keep them clean", Argues the Xàbia biologist.

And you have found one?

Forks. Found one alive and very surprised under my power extension. It was not pleased and seemed quite aggressive so I trapped it under a glass and found it a new home away from the house. The wife nearly had a fit when I showed her it.

I have found 3 of these spiders at the bottom of our pool, one was clinging to a leaf – I thought all 3 were dead until the one on the leaf started to move when I picked it out.
I threw them over the garden wall – I must admit they really are scary looking beasties (you might have guessed I'm not a fan of spiders)

Mijn man heeft m toen op by kant dood gemaakt, sorry. 🙂

Yes, it is quite common to find them at the bottom of the pool, early in the morning. I take them out and placed them on a stone in the sun and many of them are usually recovered. They flee to hide in the shade. We have never had a bite.

  5. Carmen Saiz Godone says:

I found them several times in the pool and they are really scary, they look dead but I don't think they are.

  6. Zoe bishop says:

We get them in calpe seen a few while been here. More than normal. they do survive in water. Have been known to be alive after a night underwater

    • john stephenson says:

I saw 3 last night in our pool but only found 2 when I went to get them out.
I found the 3rd this morning – very much alive.
He/she is now living elsewhere…not near our pool

Yes we found 1 so far in our pool it was dead but scary to see

  8. Carlota says:

Hello, I just found her in a campsite in Altea, Benidor, Alicante (CAP BLANC campsite), and according to the owner he says that it is under the trees and that they come out at night and IF there are many, I have been scared of death, because I have several spider bites and when I have seen it I have fallen dead, if a normal spider bites me when it swells, imagine if one of those bites me….

  9. Fran says:

Great journalism ... First the scientific name, since a biologist is named

  10. David says:

I have them in a place of my company, in Picassent, they appeared near where there is humidity, next to it there is an open field ... and today it is hot, but these days it rained

  11. Fátima says:

Yes, we have always seen them floating in the pool of three up every day .. we never see them alive ..

    • Encarna Martínez Oliveras says:

Well, be very careful ... They are not dead! It is a defense mechanism to feel vulnerable, but in reality they are alive. That is why they are more dangerous too.

  12. Yana says:

    Calle d Oca…?

  13. Patricia Kitching says:

Yes, always, every summer, Hamal Street.

  14. Christina says:

They are also located on Voltor Street, Costa Nova

  15. Ruth says:

I have them almost every day floating in the pool, of all the life. Especially when it's warmer.

    • Clara says:

Is it possible they bit me bitch?
I had a ganglion-like lump on my neck with two holes and the vet told me it was a dog bite, but I doubt it.
By the pool I have tarantulas from time to time.

  16. Federico says:

Yes, exactly on Genoa Street. Large size, be a 5cm
