The Generalitat launches the campaign and the 'Platges Segures' website to reduce the risk of drowning in swimming areas

23 July 2020 - 10: 26

The Minister of Justice, Interior and Public Administration, Gabriela Bravo, and the Minister of Territorial Policy, Public Works and Mobility Arcadi Spain, yesterday presented the institutional campaign Platges Segures, aimed at raising awareness about the need to enjoy the more than 270 kilometers of coastline of the Valencian Community in a safe way.

During the presentation, Bravo has revealed some of the figures that have led the Generalitat to promote this campaign that responds to one of the objectives that were collected in the Seminari de Govern held in February.

In this sense, Bravo has explained that "Between 2015 and 2019 251 people drowned in the Valencian Community and so far this year we have regretted 28 deaths". Bravo added that "For this reason, from the first moment, the Consell planned a campaign to strengthen information and citizen awareness" as "Many times the recklessness caused by a false self-confidence about the physical capacities of each one or by the ignorance of the characteristics of the bathing areas are behind these deaths" and has pointed out that "It is important to enjoy the coastline that we have but it must be done safely."

The Minister of Justice has also urged bathers to "Take extreme precautions and always pay attention to the life-saving and life-saving services and to the instructions on swimming that the flags of each beach collect."

For his part, the Minister for Territorial Policy, Public Works and Mobility, Arcadi Spain, has indicated that the tourism sector "It is essential for the Valencian Community and we must strengthen it now more than ever through collaboration between administrations, recovering the trust of neighbors and tourists, and above all, guaranteeing safety against COVID-19 and the safety of bathers in our beaches, reducing to the maximum the number of drowning ". Spain has added that "To achieve this, we must not forget the need for co-responsibility and prudence on the part of all those people who want to enjoy our beaches this summer."

Website and dissemination campaign

With the aim of being able to offer the population information that may be useful to reduce the risk of drowning, from this Wednesday, any user will be able to access the web of Platges Segures In which a geolocation map will be available with the more than 60 beaches in the Valencian Community, prepared by the Department of Innovation, University, Science and Digital Society and an information sheet for each beach, which includes the capacity in real time, the physical characteristics, the first aid services available and the unequivocal message that in any emergency there is no need to hesitate to call 1 · 1 · 2.

The website also includes preventive advice, safety recommendations for bathers, for people who practice water sports, as well as all the specific recommendations related to COVID-19 that must be followed this summer to go to the beach safely.

To guarantee compliance with these specific measures put in place due to the pandemic, the Generalitat incorporated on July 1 1.000 beach attendants who collaborate in controlling access and gauging on the beaches and in the correct use of itineraries marked for entry and exit.
