The Cirne Foundation retrieves a manuscript on the history of the watchtowers of the Marina Alta

November 15 from 2019 - 10: 26

The Cirne Foundation has acquired a file of 1609 that chronicles the operation of the watchtowers of Xàbia, Moraira and the Mascarat (Calp), as well as the garrisons of "walking neighbors" who stood guard in these fortifications until August of 1618.

The towers, built on the coast of the Marina Alta in the 16th century, to monitor the arrival of Berber pirates are found along our coast, although this document details the names of all those who guarded the towers from: Sant Antoni, Mesquides, Cap Prim, the Descobridor and Cala de la Branca and in the castle of Sant Martí, in Xàbia, in the tower of Moraira, in Teulada-Moraira, and in Mascarat, in Calp. The manuscript also indicates the salary charged by these guards.

With this new acquisition by the Foundation, the file is open to researchers. With your study you can know how many people formed the garrison of each of these towers as well as the "fear" that existed in the Marina Alta to the incursions of the Berber pirates.

Together with this document, the one acquired, also by the Cirne Foundation, a few months ago, joins the guards in the watchtowers. This document is dated in 1629 and refers only to the fortifications of Xàbia.
