IROX: «El Portitxol: the new challenge of underwater archeology»

25 October 2021 - 09: 42

L'Institut de Recerca Oceanografica de Xàbia (IROX) comments on one of the great tasks that will be carried out in the vicinity of l'illa del Portitxol where different remains from Roman times have been found among other discoveries.

From IROX they indicate that in the coming months one of the most exciting challenges of underwater archeology will take place on our coasts, the investigation of the seabed of the bay of Portitxol.

A few years ago Ximo Bolufer, from the Archaeological Museum of Xàbia, decided to promote the study of the seabed in the Portitxol area, and commissioned the research to two of our most future underwater archaeologists from the Valencian Country, Alejandro Pérez Prefasi and Jordi Blázquez. Àlex and Jordi began the study in search of amphoras and other objects that lie on the seabed of the bay. Initially they found a lot of amphoras that could perfectly fulfill the dream of the German Dieter Jary of creating an underwater path of the amphorae in the area. But they immediately realized that there was an even more surprising treasure, the existence of a great accumulation of amphorae and other ceramic objects and remains that foresaw a probably even more extraordinary discovery.

The Portitxol (small port), gets its name from the constant docking of boats as an ideal place of refuge for the ships that plowed our waters. This has meant that its collections preserve a whole collection of traces of the passage of navigators from all types of civilizations throughout more than 2.700 years.

This will allow us to find the keys to the maritime and commercial behavior of our ancestors and the remains that they left in their wake with the research that is started directed by the technicians of the Universitat d'Alacant. An extraordinary and excited challenge for the next few months for all of us who want to promote scientific knowledge of our sea, its biology, but also its history and our relationship with it throughout our lives.
