'Findings in l'illa del Portitxol', by Juan Legaz Palomares

November 26 from 2022 - 09: 30

The story continues. Xàbia never ceases to surprise me, to surprise us. The latest investigations carried out by Archaeologists, as I read in the news of Xàbia.com, it seems that they demonstrate the historical importance of the Bay of Xàbia, of L'illa del Portitxol and of the entire enclave of this spectacular Xàbia that, through the centuries, has been forged through the influence of other civilizations that populated the Iberian Peninsula and of which Xàbia has participated with a cultural contribution and that we have to recognize that it is part of a living, ancient and modern history that exalts and should make all Xabieros feel proud.

This medium refers to the fact that remains of columns from the Roman period, pieces of ceramics, possibly from the 200th century, from the Byzantine period, pits (tombs) and Roman walls have been found on land, which would explain a possible settlement, that is, that l'illa it was inhabited. And he continues: But this is not the only historical treasure found, but rather, under the sea, the discovery is even greater. More than XNUMX anchors, from different chronologies, have been
discovered, which makes the bay of Portitxol and old port, an exceptional point and the largest in the entire Mediterranean in the concentration of these pieces "that give us the type of ship that anchored on this island and since what time".

On the other hand, and in addition to the gold coins from Roman times recently found by some divers, the seabed of l'illa del Portitxol hides the remains of two sunken ships. One seems to be from the Punic period, 800 BC, due to the Punic amphorae found that would explain the loading of a lost ship. The other corresponds to a shipwreck from the XNUMXth century. If diversity and solidarity enrich Xàbia, its history elevates it to the levels of admiration and recognition that extends to all cultures and to all lovers of peace, tranquility, hospitality and happiness that is palpable in this enviable Villa mediterranean.

The investigation, which began in 2019 with the signing of an agreement between the  Javea Town Hall  and the University of Alicante, continues. These results invite us to continue discovering the secrets of the Historic Port of Portitxol. A round of applause for the City Council for its interest in collaborating so that the history of Xàbia continues to be at the forefront, since its privileged geographical location in the Mediterranean Sea makes it, every day, a historical reference of vital national and international importance.

From this brief account, I would like to take the opportunity to urge researchers (Archaeologists, Paleontologists, Biologists, etc.) and competent Institutions to continue deepening the research work that can contribute to finding the vestiges of the history of this wonderful Island that enrich the historical contribution to the ancient, beautiful and incomparable Villa de Xàbia, and from here I advocate its
nature conservation.

Efforts should not be spared, nor should support be lacking for these researchers, who with their study and effort can be able to discover more findings every day that extol the ancestral history of Javiense. Courage gentlemen Archaeologists to magnify the history of Xàbia, which if it is already admirable and portentous, with your contribution it will shine nationally and worldwide. And it will manage to be a great cultural mirror where many peoples and students of art and culture come to look at each other. Go ahead Xàbia!
