The Cartagena artist, Antonio Abellán, although Valencian for adoption, exhibits in Xàbia during the month of March. He does it at the Isabel Bilbao Art Gallery with the exhibition 'A place in the world'.

Abellán remembers, from his native Cartagena, his family home in the historic center, his parents, his sisters, the women who helped, the cousins, aunts, grandparents and friends who came and crowded it, in his own words, almost to diary. He also evokes the hours spent in the laboratory of his grandfather and his father, the two photographers, seeing images of intimate, family, holidays, portraits of study or study revealed, where each person seems to seek his place in the world and each world corresponds to a reality, sometimes close and
everyday, sometimes distant and unusual.

All of them, the people of the street, the public of the bars, a concert or a fair, give identity to their characters and life to their iconography full of arms, legs, shoes, looks, clothes, furniture and utensils, floors of tiles and walls decorated with paper.

Exhibition

In his work, we perceive the movement and complicity of dance couples, the noise of coffee cups and plates, the bustle of a cabaret or the whispers of lovers. The world passes by and Abellán is enthralled by a scene he keeps in memory until he paints it. Sometimes, he rescues childhood memories sifted by time, or his romantic gaze peeks at Marta, his wife, in every woman figure. Universal ideas and behaviors are revealed in a choreography of characters and emotions.

Drawing with the corrective pencils of his grandfather's studio; coloring dresses, suits or instruments; composing with trimmed papers, as would a tailor, shirts, curtains or aprons; and bringing brightness to the skins of the face, hands and long legs of his choristers, he ends up dragging us into those portraits of moments of passion.

With impeccable plastic and his special sense of beauty, Antonio Abellán chooses the subjects among his favorites, pampers his characters and makes them speak with a body language that also attributes to objects and the environment, natural or urban, that surrounds them . For this occasion, he has also made Nature a protagonist, evoking Mediterranean flora, agaves and cacti on the dunes of his childhood beaches in Cartagena.
