10 September 2020 - 13: 24

The Hermitage of San Sebastián is dedicated to the patron saint of Xàbia and is of recent construction. It was conceived to serve the population that spends time in the area.

Next you have an index with all the points that we are going to deal with.

Where is it and how to get there

This hermitage is located in the Costa Nova area. It has an entrance through the carrer del Passarell, and its plot adjoins the carrer del Milà. The hermitage is integrated into the Panorama Urbanization, about 6 kilometers south of the urban area of Xàbia, a highly populated area, mostly full of single-family homes with gardens. Here you have a map to access.

History

The hermitage is located on land donated by the Benimeli family (Jávea landowner family) in the 1960s. Its construction began in 1993 but the works were stopped for years. However, Masses were celebrated even when incomplete. In July 2015, the work on the hermitage was finished and it was blessed by Archbishop Cardenal Cañizares.

On the altar, the iron cross made by the artist and sculptor from Xàbia stands out, Tony Mari.

How it is and what it is used for

The hermitage of Sant Sebastià is on a landscaped plot of more than 2000 m2 and has a certain resemblance to the houses that surround it. In the front part it has a porch with a wide archway and access staircase. On this landing a portable altar is installed to celebrate the open-air masses, with the assistants on stone benches as in an amphitheater. In the pediment there is a glass oculus. The façade is completed by a simple belfry with a wrought-iron cross, which houses the bell of the chapel, cast around 1960 and which probably comes from another hermitage demolished in those years.

Facilities for community uses

The hermitage of San Sebastián has dependencies attached to both sides, and at its rear it has facilities for community uses, as a living room, two rooms with bunk beds (with capacity for 16 people each), bathrooms and dining room. In fact, it is used as shelter for Junior movements and youth congregations. The great room also serves as a Meeting House for meetings, meals, events ...

Masses

In the Hermitage of Sant Sebastià, masses are celebrated only during the summer months, in July and August at 20.00:XNUMX p.m.

On Sundays, mass is held outside instead of inside the chapel and is officiated by the bishop.
