Emotion and feeling is what emerged, yesterday afternoon, Wednesday, in the Plenary Hall of the Javea Town Hall. The simple act of homage to the basketball player, romà Bas Marí, for her more than 20 years of professional sports career, had the presence of family, friends, members of the Club Joventut Xàbia, which has seen him grow and municipal authorities.
Bas, in the first place, signed in the Book of Honor of the City Council upon being received in the mayor's office. In his writing, he reflected the joy of being born in Xàbia, a name that he has carried throughout Spain, with pride, along with Montgó.
In the tribute act, Romà Bas, was again, although for a few minutes, a Joventut Xàbia player. The delivery of the new club shirt by his cousin made him skip protocol and wear the green of the xabiero club where he started in the world of basketball.
And it is that, already being an outstanding player since he was a child, at just 14 years old (in 1997) he was signed by Gandia for four seasons. He then made the leap to the EBA and LEB Plata leagues, playing for teams such as Hellín, Santa Pola, Molina de Segura, Navarra, Menorca, Lucentum de Alicante, Ford Burgos, Palencia Baloncesto and TAU Castelló. He is currently recovering from a knee injury and is temporarily sidelined. In his record he has four promotions to the ACB league and two Princess Cups with Palencia. Great successes that only lacks the jump to the ACB League. Fact that he collapsed after achieving promotions due to the economic commitment that the clubs supposed.
In the speeches, the beginnings of the Xàbia basketball player were recalled, "a boy who was always with a basketball and it was already seen that he stood out. He not only liked this sport but also lived it," said the mayor, José Chulvi.
For his part, the Councilor for Sports, Alberto Tur, has highlighted the values of sportsmanship that Bas has always shown on the court and his fighting character to improve and remain at the highest level for so long. Tur has reviewed that Romà Bas is a reference for the new generations.
In his turn, the athlete thanked the support he has always received from his family and friends. Bas recalled his beginnings in Xàbia and regrets that the current injury does not allow him to continue playing, although he does not rule out returning to the track even if it is not professionally.
In the act of homage, a video was shown with the best moments of Romà Bas during his sporting career and he was presented with a souvenir on behalf of the City Council as recognition.
