The Forum Obert Marià Iglesias highlighted both achievements and problems of education in Spain

01 October 2013 - 00: 00

Last Friday, the PSOE municipal group began its conferences at the Forum Obert Marià Iglesias after the summer break. The main theme of this conference was quality education and was taught and directed by Emiliano Martinez, current vice president of the Santillana Foundation. Among many other things, Martinez spoke about the achievements and problems of current Spanish education.

On the one hand he emphasized the achievements of Spanish education, stating that Spain has achieved universal and early schooling with a percentage of schooling of a 98,7% of children between 3-4 years. In this sense Martinez also highlighted the increase in the percentage of university graduates in recent years.

On the other hand, there were the disadvantages of Spanish education. In this sense, Emiliano highlighted the problem of the high dropout rates before completing compulsory education, which is 25% in our country. Another factor that also worries our speaker is the 36,6% of students in compulsory education who repeat a year at least once and the low percentage of students in the highest levels of PISA (Program for International Student Assessment). Finally, one of the problems that is most worrying is the "exaggerated difference between autonomous communities«.
