The astronaut and former minister Pedro Duque transmits his knowledge about space travel in Xàbia

November 21 from 2023 - 12: 17

In the House of Culture of Xàbia, on November 14, the second of the three conferences scheduled for the exhibition took place The adventure of the meter, organized by the Meridià Zero Association. The talk was given by astronaut and former Minister of Science Pedro Duque, presented by Rafael Andarias, doctor, scientific communicator and member of the organizing association.

In the first part of his speech, Duque addressed space travel as fundamental drivers of recent scientific and technological advances. The second part focused on the commented viewing of a video that summarized his last trip to the International Space Station in 2003, as an astronaut for the European Space Agency.

This conference is part of the exhibition The adventure of the meter located in the Soler Blasco Archaeological Museum of Xàbia, which presents, through explanatory panels and in a didactic manner, the history of the work to determine the measurement of the meridian arc and the future length standard, the meter, at the beginning of the century XIX. The last phase of these works took place in Valencian and Balearic territory, with the southernmost peninsular station being Montgó.

The third and last conference will be given by Luis García-Asenjo next Friday, November 24 in the conference room of the same Archaeological Museum, addressing the geodetic work for the recovery of vestiges of the meridian arc of Paris in the ancient Kingdom of Valencia.

The exhibition also presents the 25 covers of the 25 issues of Daualdeu magazine, edited by Meridià Zero. Inaugurated on November 3, the exhibition will conclude on the 30th of the same month in Xàbia, and will later be presented in other locations within and outside the region, including Pedreguer, Gata and Valencia, at the CSIC House of Science.
