The Municipal Archive of Xàbia receives a donation of 600 documents and historical photographs

03 December 2020 - 15: 06

THEArxiu Municipal de Xàbia has received a very interesting donation from the neighbor María Magdalena Marí Molina. It is a set of more than 600 documents, including letters, official personal documents and up to 400 photographs that reflect the social life of the last century.

Magdalena, born in 1939, has been all her life linked to education in Xàbia, where she practiced her profession as a nursery and primary school teacher from 1967 until her retirement in 2004. Initially she was in charge of substitutions in several of the schools in the municipality: port school, Portitxol, the girls' unit and the Vicente Tena until in 1970, he joined the María Inmaculada school where he developed his entire career.

From the Archive they want to publicly thank Magdalena Marí's contribution, since it is extremely useful at an ethnographic and costumbrist level, detailing specific little-known aspects such as the local history of bullfighting.

The documents will be digitized so that they are available for investigation and consultation and will later be returned to the owner, except for a part that by express decision of Magdalena, will be kept as original in the Archive.

From this municipal service it has been considered to make public some of the photographs on social networks in case a neighbor recognizes the people or has information about the images and thus expand the information in their documentation.

To collaborate with the Municipal Archives you can write to the email arxiu@ajxabia.org or call 96 650 88 27.

I am pleased with this donation from Magdalena Marí. On how many occasions have I come to her to provide me with some information, she has done so and I have always found an answer. In my first research work, I interviewed his mother about the customs of Xàbia in relation to the three essential moments of life: birth, marriage and death. I went with a handheld tape recorder and he took great care of me, I was even able to photograph a newborn garment. I also did it with three more elderly people and it was a learning experience for me in doing interviews, realizing the mistakes and modifying the structure of the interviews and if in the first the last topic dealt with was death, in the last it was the reverse order since being older people, the subject of death created anxiety. You always have to learn.
I believe that these donations to the Municipal Archive must be revitalized, since it is the ideal place to keep this documentation that reveals the history of the town from personal stories. And we all have history in our homes and we have to save many papers that their final destination can be the container.
